Hi everyone,
Any suggestions for books/blueprints detailing how to build a deceptive base large enough for a 6 foot male? I am also looking for instructions on how to bevel. Thanks, Dan |

Check out the video put out by Rand Woodbury. It will teach you exactly how to build a deceptive base. It will give you the tools (no punn intended) to construct a base with the necessary dimensions to fit you.
I'm 6'4" and haven't had any trouble making a base deceptive enough to conceal my body. The construction is essentially the same...just bigger. Luckily for many of us tall guys, we tend to be skinnier creatures. This definitely helps keep our bases nice and thin. As far as design is concerned make sure that a bevel will fit the look of the props and set that it's going to be used with. I shudder every time I see a black and silver bevel base that's completely out of sync with the rest of the props. I recommend sketching everything out as though it were a thin regular table and then adding some of the deceptive elements last. I tend to get better end results when I add the thickness to the table last rather than first. It forces me to match the table to the rest of the scene without assuming that the size and shape of the table will make it look so thin that it doesn't matter. (Believe me, it matters!) Best of luck! Chris.

Chris,
Cool thanks for the tips. Do you know which Rand Woodbury video I should get? Dan |

You should get the book also from Rand Woodbury "The base Book" I am 6 foot 1 and I have built some stuff and had other built or mod for me to fit. The Base Book explains how to bevel and construct Bases, tables and stairs. And if you can get all of the Videos...Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not hve it!

I recommend all four videos, then you can learn it really well. So get them all, it`s not bad investment, cause you`ll find so many neccessary tips from all of them. Explanations on those videos are really detailed.

Rand Woodbury's Illusionworks video series are no longer available according to MisDirections.com. Rand apparently plans on putting them on DVD but there is no release date. Is anyone interested in selling the series? If so, please email me at dan@danbowen.com
