NOthing good has EVER come out of one of these threads.
It deteriorates into Blaineiacks who feel he changed the face of magic, and walks on water, arguing with those who think he sucks. I am in the middle. I give him HUGE credit for being on TV, having a goal and accomplishing it. As for "best magician of our(or any) era" get a serious grip.

My belief of what makes a good magician seems to be different from yours.

He deserves credit for what he's done. I have a lot of respect for him. His street magic is great, we all know that, but he's not a god.

David worked with Paul Harris in creating a "character" for his TV special. Some Magi don't like the character. But...it worked. It was perfect for 1998.
Watch the first special "Street Magic". While some of it ( the Levitation ) has some camera tricks for the "home viewing" audience, most of it was good sleight of hand you'd expect from someone with many years experience to have. He also had some folks that were not statues, but needed management so they didn't mess things up. He did it very well. Look at his work on Fechter's "Be Honest What is it" ( which is now gets referred to a as Two Card Monte ) in the Dallas Cowboy's locker room. Do that for average lay people and do it well and you'll have the same reactions. Why some Magicians think he walks on water, I have no idea. Why some Magicians hate him, I have no idea. I think he's a bright guy who had the guts and initiative to create a career for himself. Chris

And as for building a career for himself, more power to him! It took a lot to pitch an idea like that, and have the professionalism and experience to back it up. Whether you like him or not (and I usually do not), he has done great things for himself. Well put Chris. |

....yeah
Posted: Oct 24, 2006 12:54pm P.S. Don't underestimate how easily people will realize that the person who's having the party happens to know the very things that you end up divining. My suggestion is let the tipped info come out as accidents, while you are trying to do something else i.e. "I know you are focusing on a image but I keep getting a three digit number... What is 3443? It's that your street address, Okay, well at least I can move on"

Well he has inspired a new generation of magicians.
You can argue either way if it is good or if it is bad. We have a thread by a guy who wants to do "magic at the mall" unannounced because he saw David Blaine do it. I am not so sure that "great things for magic" is true as it is claimed by his devoted followers. The kind who remind me of the South Park episode. BUT again he INSPIRED A SOUTH PARK episode, that speaks for itself. He has indeed done great for himself.

I can see it both ways. He has done great things for magic in that he is largely a part of the fact that magic is back in the public eye, and more widely accepted. He has also hindered magic because of so many Blaine wannabees that do just what Danny said - perform anytime and for anyone, without giving a thought to the proper manner by which to perform. So he has indeed inspired a new generation of magicians, for better or for worse.
By the way Alex, did you end your boycott of the internet already? I never would have been able to do it even for a day, even if "I choose to." |

Yeah I went for an entire week!
BTW, I actually don't see the Blaine wannabee's as a problem really, I just don't see them as real magicians. And my audience can tell the difference.

Why does everybody hate. Blaine and Angel both have put butts in magic shops. This in return helps us because a busy shop is a happy shop and this reflects on the regulars who stop by. Sure there is a lot of trash being put out by folks who don't understand the practise, practise, practise train of thought. This only helps the true magi. A spec might have seen this p*** poor show and will trully apreciate a real magi. Put this negative energy into more positive needy parts of magic.

Kudos on going that long! Anyway you make a good point, more often than not the Blaine wannabees don't cause too many problems, but I certainly agree that they're not real magicians. And again you're right: audiences cannot usually tell the difference. I need to ask you a question but it's unrelated so I'll PM you. |

My comment was that he ends the stunt and that appears to be it, anti-climatic was the term I used. I now understand from reading Magic magazine that he "escaped" from the shackles and lept some 50 feet to the stage actually going <through> it! Hardly anti-climatic. But I'm still not thrilled with the endurance stunts. Incidently, Target went public and said they would have given the money to the kids even if Blaine hadn't made it. (Oh yeah, they would have said; "Sorry kids, he didn't make it, you don't get your shopping spree!" The negative PR would have killed them, they would have NEVER done that... Wal*Mart might have.)
