I have an insane obsession with knowing as much as possible about magic.
Someone at a convention in the future will need a reference and someone else will point to me. I'll be wearing a cape in a shadowy corner and I'll be all "Yes my son, you can find that in Richards Almanac, Summer 1985". |

I have mixed feelings about this.
I love books and consider the physical object of a book a thing of beauty, especially the wonderful editions that are put out today, most particularly magic books, such as those put out by Hermetic Press, Kaufman and H&R. I own and have read many books on history, philosophy, science, literature, etc. I also have a good size magic library. And yet, while I love to read, I find magic books tough. I don't enjoy reading magic books. Many of them are poorly written (though modern writers like Stephen Monch and Richard Kaufman have raised the bar). How many times have you struggled over just what an author is getting at, only to discover he meant the left hand, not the right hand? Although some books--not many--I've read cover to cover, I mostly use my library as a reference library, But I agree that modern technology will never replace the book and am worried that all the money I've invested, first in videos and then in DVDs, will be waisted because the, first video and now DVD, technology will become obsolete. Is there any hope for this civilization? "What is it sir?" He wiped away the dust on his discovery. "It's 'Bobo's Modern Coin Magic.'" "Let's sit down and check it out." |

I believe everything you need for success in magic has already been written and is waiting for you to discover it. It's all available. The book you don't read won't help! I do have a good collection of DVD's, but I love my books. I can read a book and work out a routine and I find by working it out from the book, it helps me put my own touches on it vs. watching a dvd. Helps my creative juices flow. I also like the fact I have an idea and can look up several variations and have many references to go to. Also, it isn't what the book costs; it's what it will cost you if you don't read it. Maybe an idea you would've never gotten or a tip to help you with a completely different routine you wouldn't have got had you not read the book. Maybe reading a certain book will help you become a better performer. I hear another great quote . . . "Miss a meal if you have to, but never miss a book." Jonathan Dupree |

If I didn't buy magic books my Wife would just waste the money on paying bills and buying clothes for the kids.

Years ago, when I was 20, I was table hopping at this restaurant that was two blocks from my apartment. It was very, very cold that winter and I didn't have a coat. One day, the manager saw me running through the snow without a coat, but with a nice, new hardcover book I just bought tucked under my arm.
That night, after hours, he and I, and a few others were having a few (dozen) beers on the company's tab, and he pointed to me and said, "You know the funny thing about Dan? If you give him $20, and show him a nice, warm $20 coat, and a $20 book...He'll buy the book..." I think he meant it as an insult. But you know, all these years later...I still pick the book.

I have something like 1500 magic books. Wife has about the same number of art books. Cook books? I never counted those that she has.

Books are great. They foster creativity unlike DVD's.
You also learn the real art of magic from books.

The point in having so many books is not to learn everything from them... but rather to learn the style of the tricks/magicians so that we could come up with our own inventions someday.
