One thing I foubnd funny/reassuring was watching Derren's stage shows compared to his TV specials. I felt comforted that he "read minds" in all the same ways that I do

At nottingham University we have the most amazing "Lakeside arts theatre" I'm sure he could fill it with his presence. |

The performance should be about you, not someone they have seen on the telly. To I agree with Bill that the performance is not meant to be about the performing mentalist but is best concentrated upon the audience. I do, however, agree PARTLY with the "Yes, he's good," approach. There is more I would like to add and this is only from my style. When someone asks if I can do "that thing that Pommy mind reader guy did on UKTV" (Derren), I reply, "That's Derren's specialty and mine is in a slightly different field. Let me show you what I mean...." Then I lead into something else myself. This applies for those working in other forms of magic also who may be asked things like, "Can you do that levitation like that David Blaine guy?" (I was asked that too upon my telling someone about what I do) All the best, Chris |

There has been an ongoing argument about how much David Blaine has hurt magic in the Food For Thought section. Quite frankly, I don't think Blaine has hurt magic one bit. He has made accessible a couple of formerly difficult audiences for the average magician to reach.
Shortly after his first special, I was getting the oil changed in my big van, because I was going to head cross-country to do some school shows. The attendant knew I was a magician, so he asked me if I had seen David Blaine. I said that I had not, but that I had heard that he did some very interesting things. So the fellow asked if I could do anything like David did. I told him that I wasn't sure, because I had not seen his show, but I would do a couple of things for him that he might enjoy. So, I did the ID for him. He went nuts!!! He got me to go to the rear part of the shop and perform for the rest of the crew. So I did OOTW (which I have done for about 40 years now!) The whole bunch of them were certain that I had mojo out the wazoo. I could have started a religion. Now, here's the point. I make it a practice never to knock a magician who has got a television show. This goes for mentalists, too. Why? If they are so bad, and I'm so good, why don't I have a television show? It makes us look like a bunch of gossipy old women when we knock the guys people know. It's best to let the glory they have gotten kindle an interest in what we do. I'm sure you wonder why I feel qualified to speak about mentalism. Well, that was what I did when I first got back into magic in the early 1970's. I still do a lot of it. And if you have Paramiracles, look at the title page. Then you will understand.

In my simple view (and I am simple), and televisual attention on magic, mentalism, and even the allied arts is good for us.

Then when they see a 'live' act - whether magic or mentalism - they seem to make reference to the TV 'stars' but are more appreciative of it being performed 'in their face' if you like. As for mentions of so-called stars - Blaine hasn't got much of a reputation here in the UK - (People just laughed at him hanging over the Thames in a plastic box.) Derren is King here and even I find that only a few people will mention him, in passing, when I'm doing something. |
