Another mental barrier can be how hard you work. How hard you work on your show, how hard you work on serving your customers, how hard you work on getting more shows, etc. Some people put in just enough effort to get by, instead of enough effort to advance their lives.

Just a thought here...a million dollars might not make you as happy as you think.
How much money does it take to be happy? Over the years I have followed an interesting story that comes out every so often...Gallup does a poll that evaluates happiness and income level. While the amount required to make money no longer a factor in happiness has crept up over the years the conclusion is constant. After a certain point more money will not make you happy. What is that magic amount now? It is about $60,000/year for an adult. Gallup found that money is a factor in happiness up to that level. If you were making $30,000, making $40,000 will make you happier. This trend continues until you hit $60,000. What happens then? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. A person who makes 70-80-90,000 or more a year is not a bit happier than one making $60,000. One Ph.D. commented he had never seen such a flat line response as occurs at $60,000. Even people who made a million were not a bit happier than someone making $60,000. So what do you need to be rich? If your definition is to make enough money so that it is no longer a factor for happiness in your life the number is $60,000 for pretty much everyone. Just a thought for consideration. |

I completely agree, there is a point where having more means nothing.
A slight change in a life style can make one feel rich. Like they say, there are only two ways to become rich: 1. Spend less than you make. 2. Make more than you spend. Tom PS. I think we all pretty well agree that money is not everything and it shouldn't be the main goal after a point. BUT NOW, this doesn't mean we should set lower goals, and never stride to be better. There is that feeling of winning that only comes from reaching goals. It's not about money at all, it's about winning the contest within.

What point is enough.
No Bills, own homes, and can go on a nice vacation with the family. Anything beyond that means up grading living style, which does not make one happier, just more work maintaining it.

Here's a video about what drives us (cash reward vs. other incentives - autonomy, mastery, self-directed).

Some of the mindset aspect is self-esteem. How much do you believe you're worth?

Right now, for me, I'd like to earn an extra $10-30K per year. I'd like to see growth in my business. I believe that I have the potential to do it.
And when I hit that goal, I might re-evaluate to aim higher. I'm not going to decide right now that I'm not going to aim higher. I believe in steps for growth, and focusing on the step in front of me, as opposed to the whole staircase. Does it mean I'm currently satisfied or unsatisfied? A little of both. - Donald

They say Fear and Desire are really the only two motivators in life.
They also say that the fear of failure is greater than the desire for gain. (So this fear causes most to stand still.) The high achievers have learned to shift the motivation from fear (what most people use) to desire. So I think in the end if you can build a big enough desire, and set aside the major fears, you can have whatever you want. Tom

Money isn’t necessarily everything. A friend married a Superior Court judge so I got to know him socially. He was making just under $90,000 a year and worked from 9AM to Noon and 1:30 to about 4:30 or 5, five days a week. He had to read through about 500 pages of material every two weeks.
Every so often he would be offered a position as a senior partner in a large law office with a salary that started at $400,000 a year and up. He always turned them down. He explained that to earn that kind of money he would be on-call for high level clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, often out to a private jet to the East Coast or wherever, never at home, never with his children. That and he told me he wouldn’t be hearing what he called the three “sweetest words in the English language:” “Yes, You’re Honor.” |

Uplifting David, reinforcing, a Million can be made but at what price is one willing to go to make it.
Now not having a Million and instantly gaining it (Lottery/Inheritance), most people will not know "what to do with it", besides spending it, mostly on "STUFF". STUFF: "Things you really don't absolutely need".

The book I mentioned earlier by T. Harv Eker, also talks about whether earning a lot of money has to mean a sacrifice of your family / relationships, all your spare time, and other things that are important to you. Many assume that it does. But it doesn't have to be that way.

The key phase is "it doesn't have to be that way. "
So I don't make the same mistake twice, in my Private Notes, I list the things that need to be done before cashing in a big lottery ticket, then I go on to list what I would like to do with it. Interesting, is that when you don't have it you have a difficult time coming up with VIABLE items to buy/spend, since there is no money at this time.

Donald, I haven't read that book but I agree, money is not all evil.
Truth is, those who say, I wouldn't want a million dollars if they gave it to me, would probably take it if offered. It's not that they don't want it. It's they "think" they can't pay for it. Tom

You can certainly design your business around making more money AND spending less time working (thus more for family and personal interests).
This has been my experience for the past couple of years. I went from performing 325 shows a year to 81 shows last year (with a goal to maintain 50 shows/presentations a year). My income continues to grow significantly and I spend way more time with my family and personal interests. Summers off, take my kids to school, I can go for a run everyday and take care of myself. Why shouldn't I have it all? Why shouldn't you? Don't you deserve it? Here's a tip: you don't have to work harder to make more money. You do, however, need to make better choices. Ever seen a hard working person still struggling with their finances? Of course. Working hard and making more sacrifices in your life doesn't have to be the road to success (even if it is ONE of the roads you could choose to take). |

One more thing to ponder. And I don't know if it was mentioned earlier on this thread.
A million dollars a year from magic doesn't have to be taken literally as that amount. For some performers, achieving a goal of $50,000 a year might be like achieving a million dollars as a goal. For others, it might be $75,000. For others, it might be $100,000. Etc. They see those amounts as almost unachievable, yet somehow find a way to do it. - Donald
