I was interested in the rights to the Change Bag!
I'm not talking about the "handle-style"... I'm curious about the one much like the "Ikle-Pickle Change Bag"(with the zipper). Is this design public domain? Any help will be gladly appreciated!!! Thanks in advanced! -Bryan Gilles |

Although a change bag is not described directly, its use is inferred in "The Discoverie of Witchcraft" by Reginald Scot (1584), so we may assume that it was in fairly common use among magicians even before his time. This would include only the principle of the double bag. The addition of the handle(s)and zippers and Velcro are obviously modern variations, but which all use the same basic principle of the double bag. Obtaining the rights to that principle is a matter of holding a seance and calling forth Reginald Scot for his blessing upon your project.

I had an idea for a radical change bag made from a common everyday object... a baseball hat... but the development to DO IT RIGHT has taken too long and I just saw an ad for just that prop by a dealer... so I'll have to scrap all my (and Porper's) work. DARN...

So, am I safe to "mass-produce" (actually make several) Change Bags much like the Ikle-Pickle Bags with my own little changes in the appearance/look of the bag?

The change bag is in the public domain and you are free to make your version of it without anyone's permission.

I have a wizard hat that is a change bag.
I think I would agree that change bags would be in the public domain. They've been around too long not to be. Ickle Pickle sure didn't invent them.

Creative Magic carries a baseball cap change bag on their site now.
It seems there is seldom something new under the sun. Magically, Walt |
