Besides the issue (or non-issue) of making sure the spectator turns the stem, isn't it more of an issue that you are using YOUR watch for these effects and that even if the watch is a working watch, the spectator will still think that it is somehow a trick/magic watch.

I have worked it several ways and have settled on taking any heat away from the Sykys. I do this by starting out with the premise that I am going to use THEIR watch. I do this to the point of having them turn their watch up-side-down to randomly change the time so nether of us know where they stop the watch. Then, as a last minute idea, I say” here, you use my watch and I will use your watch so you know I am not tricking you somehow.” I Do Not predict the time they stop the hands on my watch (the one that they are holding), instead, I tell them to cover the watch from my sight when they are done turning the stem clockwise, and to push in the stem and turn it over and stare at the time for 10 seconds or so. As they are doing that, I set their watch (the one that I am holding) to the time I think they are looking at. To date, no one has questioned the Sykys. In fact, on two occasions, I have overheard the subject tell others that I used THEIR watch to read their mind. I do not think this watch draws much attention as a “trick” watch. But I think the presentation I am using drawn all attention away from the Sykys. I am, indeed, very happy with this watch. Unlike other posters on this thread, I found the booklet very hard to understand, but the watch is quality all the way. Bob |

That is good, Bob!
I also like Al Straker's idea of using Kronos to follow a Sykys effect. (or possibly before using Sykys) I'll admit that I agreed with Sbays and Michael regarding spectators possibly dismissing this as "trick" watch. But "Using the participant's watch" for the prediction, and/or incorporating Kronos into the routine should remove this perception from the spectator's mind. |

Bob's advice is excellent, his idea is very similar to the first phase of the 3 phase routine I do with Sykes. You have to understand how to cancel out methods by routining, that is the key to getting the most from gimmicked 'everyday' items. By the time you have finished your 'time manipulation' routines they should have ruled out gimmiked watches at all as you would use borrowed watches for at least part of the set.
Also, because Sykes has the capability of multiple phases, this helps cancel the 'trick watch' method in their mind due to the 3 or 4 different times you are successful on. Therefore it is one of those items that breaks the never repeat rule. In fact to help cancel the method you should always repeat (or use multiple reveals). What I have aimed to do is create a 3 phase, modular routine that builds. It also involves their watch for the first phase.

Can I justjump in for a minute here and say that Al was kind enough to share his Sykys watch routine with me a few days ago, after reading it and digesting all the little ideas and subtleties he gives I can say that Al is a genius.
he has put together a solid routine that if delivered with a strong presentation will knock your audiences for six. The three phases combined create a logical and fluid routine that by the end of it, your audience should have run away from you in pure fear. Al has however designed this routine "consciously" in that each stage can be performed as a stand up piece and doesn't neccessarily need the other phases, leaving the performer to decide whats best for him and his audiences. well done Al on a solid piece! all the best Looch

Hey looch,
Thanks man! Coming from a guy who recently released us a book FULL of GEMS (Simple and Direct Mentalism) these comments are greatly appreciated!!! My sykys routine is available to anyone who cares to ask nicely. Also, do yourself a favour and buy looch's book if you haven't already. I have recently been re-reading it with great pleasure. Cheers, Al

I've been working with this for a month or so and agree with Al, Bob and others here- this is a strong utility that should never be used as just a trick watch- it can be used in so many different ways.
I've also veered away from any of the supplied routines and personalized it. I've used it as Bob suggested as a kind of synchronicity effect with a spectators watch. I'd also agree the single direction on the pin is a non-issue with proper audience management. I highly recommend this...

In addition to the above post, let me also say I highly recommend Al Straker's excellent 3 phase routine- which builds very nicely on some of the ideas discussed here.
I love multi-phase routines, and his is perfect for the SYKYS and superior to those supplied with the utility- it should definitely be included in future editions. Thanks Al! V

After working my Sykys routine for quite some time now, I have some important finesse to share...
One small point with Sykys I think is important to mention. Sometimes, people will fee the stem "tighten" as they wind the stem and the watch hands reach the f**** time. This doesn't happen very often but I have had a couple of people notice this. To avoid this being a problem I have 2 solutions. The first one is my preferred solution. 1. Twist the stem yourself as an explanation of what to do until it "tightens" . Then when people go to wind it they will not feel a change and will think it is always slightly firm like that. 2. Have various people briefly twist the stem once or twice as they pass the watch around. I sometimes just carry the watch around for people allowing them to twist the stem BRIEFLY (one or two twists) as I hold it face down. If you are working for a small group I will simply have 2 people alternating twisting the stem. That way they are less likely to notice the point at which the winding feels slightly tighter. The disadavantage of this solution is that you have less control of the watch if it is passed around many people and if you carry it around this can raise suspicion. That is why I now use the first solution. Just a small tip but an important one if you intend to work with this often. The Sykys is such a beautiful gimmick, it can create very strong effects! Cheers, Al
