Now that we're into the Christmas season, I wondered what you guys find plays best in your Christmas shows?
Probably the most popular routine in my shows, for all ages, is my "Exploding Christmas Tree", which is the Magic Christmas Tree from Practical Magic, with a snow cannon attached to the back. Pure visual delight, and very, very Christmassy. Has anyone has seen Loki's beautiful Christmas Crystal Ball, which is like the small glass balls with a Christmas scene, which you shake to make the snow fall, but it's much bigger? I wonder who made that for him, it's awesome! Also, what's your facourite Santa production effect, as I plan to offer this for next year? Doug |

My favorite is Forgetful Frosty. A quality prop. It is a well thought out routine for the Forgetful Freddy concept.

Potty: If you go into the craft stores (actually most stores that sell Christmas decorations these days) you'll find large plastic balls filled with Christmas Scenes and the falling snow effect (but blown around with air rather than under water). You might be able to make use of one of those. Also, Jim Gerrish and I had the idea of getting one of the huge Inflatable Lawn Decoration Snow Globes, and cutting a resealable (Velcro) opening in the back so a person could get inside to either manipulate the snow figures OR to actually appear in the scene, either in costume or just as a magician. Lots of possibilities with those things!
For Santa Production I've used Jim's "Transfigmigration" from his PVC Pipe Book #2 (on my site) as well as his "Fireplace Elf and Santa Finale" from PVC Pipe Book #3. The Transfigmigration is good for changing an assistant dressed as an elf into Santa, and the Santa can be inexperienced (the CEO of a company dressed up, for instance). The Fireplace Illusion requires all rehearsed assistants (no CEO's getting in the way!).

I can't think of a more perfect Christmas "prop" than a fireplace. Thanks for that, Professor!

I have been doing Tim Sonefelt's Polar Express routine and it has gone over really well because I do it as Magical Storytelling.

What's wrong with a super big Snowstorm in China. Guaranteed to make any school hall caretaker really mad as he tries to brush up clean for Christmas. Bah! Humbug!!

I used to do a bit (to music) with a stratosphere...
The assistant would come out with a small christmas tree with the stratosphere balls as ornaments and a length of tinsel. I took the tinsel off first and turned it into a long candy cane (white & red appearing cane). Then I took the "ornaments off and did stratosphere. The strat tube was painted white and had red stripes like a peppermint. The "joker box" was re-decorated to look like a Christams present complete with a bow on the front. It was a cute routine. Feel free to use it if you would like... Lyndel |

Christmas Die Box.
GREAT idea Ken! For younger kids, a large red change bag makes the perfect Santa's Bag of Toys. |

Depending on the diebox, the tolerances between the die and the gimmicked sh*** may not allow even a thin layer of wrapping paper...
I recently tried something similar, but wound up having to paint the design I was going for rather than use paper on the die. Lyndel |

I also painted my die to look like a present. I was able to use foil to make a ribbon around the box.

I don't know if "mid-made Santa" is sold by Hank Lee or not, but I do know it is made by P&A silks Peter White. It is not cheap, but if you buy "Frankie the snow man" at the same time there are many interchangable silks, and Frankie will work for every religion, and all year round.

There are two tricks called Mis-made Santa. The one that uses silks (P&A). I use it all of the time in my holiday shows (just last night, too.)
There is also the one that is made from blocks, and works like the trick, Skeleton in the Closet. Sometimes it is called Santa Stuck in the Chimney. I used to have one of those, too. Unless perhaps, "The Sorcerer" was referring to Santa's Suits, which is a different silk trick again. - Donald

No, it is the silks one I have. I thinks it is P&A, not Hank Lee. Very good for holiday shows.

Tenyo's "Dynamite Tube" can be easily turned into a Magic Christmas Cracker (do you have those in the States?) Simply buy a box of cardboard crackers (the kind that have thin diamonds cut out to form the "necks" of the cracker.) Unwrap them, then to perform the trick, show the Dynamite Tube as normal, wrap it in a cracker wrap, with the help of a child (keep the snap inside, it can be taped to the inside of the wrap). Tape the cracker up, and pull it with the child - SNAP! - the cracker breaks open to reveal it's full of goodies!
For this effect, I remove the original plastic tube from the Dynamite tube, and replace it with a toilet roll tube. |

There's another Mis-Made Santa effect that was put out by Supreme Magic. Based on Ian Adair's Dressing Doll principle.
A giant Christmas card is shown with a B&W Santa on the inside and some paints. Santa is removed from the card and placed in a chimney from which he keeps trying to escape (or fall into, whichever you like). Eventually he disappears from the chimney and reappears in the card but unfortunately he's painted in the wrong colours - and the paints have vanished. Another attempt is made before he ends up in the correct colours. |

Lyndel, as usual you've got a grea idea. I love the Stratosphere presentation.
I still use the tired old "Hippity Hop Santas" but I only use one of the Santa sets. Rather than have them change places, I present it more like a "Fraidy Cat" prop, i.e. I pretend his suit is changing colors, let them catch me "turning it around," do all the gags associated with "turning it around" to reveal the correct suit color at the end. I think it's just as strong as the original, and now I have a backup prop in the second Santa! |
