Hello again Paul,
I saw that somebody asked you about the tricks you were performing in your actual repertoire. I have a more general question about the repertoire of a full-time magician like you (even if part of your time seems to be devoted to writing as well). I wonder how much tricks are, at the same time, within your "ready-to-perform" repertoire. For example, I know a lot of card routines: there are a few I perform very very often, but others are buried a little deeper. If I want to do those ones, I'll have to take a moment to recap the routine in my head and maybe do a specific sleight-of-hand once or twice as a check-up (I think, for example, of your routine Hail-stone, which I love but don't perform very often. Each time, I'll have to quickly recap the routine in seconds and maybe practice the "double-bottom turnover" once or twice beforehand if I plan to do it.) Do you have a "core repertoire" of tricks you do all the time (like Crowded coins, as you told in another post) and other ones you have in kind of a "reserve". I heard once, for example, that you were performing "raise-rise". Is that something that you should rework a bit beforehand of do you manage to keep the knack and the routine ready at your fingertips for impromptu performance? I ask that because I realize that I have to perform a trick a huge lot of time to get it really good into my hands and to be able to perform it in a relaxed and almost unconscious mode. The time I can devote to magic performances doesn't allow me to give all tricks I know (and that I love) this same treatment. So, a lot of them fall into that trick "reserve". I wonder how you handle that phenomenon. Thanks, Jonathan. |

I have a repertoire of tricks I know inside out. This includes some real classics of magic - Matching The Cards, Triumph, Open Travellers, Slow Motion Aces, Chop Cup, Ring On Stick, Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind, Card To Box, Tenkai Pennies, Cards Across, Three Fly and a few others.
Most of these are my own handlings or presentations but, as you can see, a lot of these are classics. I do the Predator every single show I do. I do Ricochet in most shows. When working something like a bar set-up I use Spectrum a lot to open my show and then do an ace assembly with the changed deck. I use my new coins to glass a lot, these days and I've been doing several ten card poker deals for years. When I work platform there are several effect I use regulalrly. I always have something new to work on. The last time I worked the parlour of the Castle, I broke a new trick in starring Earl the mind reading bear (puppet)! Puppet magic is hardly my usual fare but Earl went on to fool almost everyone and that's why we were together. I do a couple of Tamariz routines regularly but I still need to go over those in my head because they're so complex. The same goes for my memorized deck sequence. I have countless tricks that I dig up for sessions with other magicians. I also have a lot of good ideas that I haven't found room for in my act but I am confident other performers could find valuable. The most important thing is to have five or six core effects, routined so you can do them in a moments notice. I have my tablehopping act sitting about five feet away from me right now. I haven't hopped tables for years but I know I can pick up those props and go out right now, without having to think about the effects. That comes from doing something for a LONG time. My table hopping act used the four most common tricks in Restaurant magic (the same tricks used by Don Alan and countless others) but the the routines, the handlings and the set up took years to get right so everything was automatic. The lines are mostly the same corny lines everyone uses but they work. That kind of ingrained act takes years of experience to burn into your brain but once it's there, it's always there! P |

Speaking of "Spectrum"... great color changing deck routine, Paul!
