Talk to your teacher. He sounds sincere and can really help you grow if you can channel your enthusiasm towards what he sees you needing to improve at.

Learning card orders and names can be useful, but eventually lose their practicality the more you know and the more you perform for lay people. I would highly suggest working out of Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic for a broad view, and for focusing on card magic start the Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles series. Begin with Volume 1, and after that you can skip around. Learning techniques and "moves" with cards and other objects are more important in the long run than learning single or marketed effects. Still, 3 Card Monte, Invisible Deck, a Bill Switch etc are all good places to start. Sounds like you're doing very well.

First, before you actually learn more tricks, ask yourself if you really need more. At least for now, really focus on your presentation. I've seen a Scotch and Soda routine (where a penny and a dime switch places) done with so much embarassment and nervousness that it completely ruined any astonishment. What you should do is actually perform the tricks, praticing your patter and routine until it's flows like water.

Thanks. I have Mark wilsons complete course in magic coming. I got it off of Ebay. It should be here any day now. I don't think Im going to buy any tricks for a while. Just because I don't want to bog myself down with after market tricks. I rather study from my teacher and a book. I will keep you guys posted

Hey Sleightly_Dangerous,
Just out of curiosity, what offhand do you get from the Tarbell course as opposed to the Wilson? I cut my teeth on the Wilson back in the 70's and I reember going through a borrowed set of Tarbell a long time ago but I remember very little of it. |

Isn't the tarbell course from the 40s and kinda out dated. Or are the newer ones updated. I mean I guess magic mechanics have not changed in years. I was just wondering. My local magic shop has the whole course. I would like to look at it but there sealed in plastic. I think he might have a used copy of vol 4. I will go there today and check it out

Mark Wilson is a very good book to start and to get a good overview. Way underpriced . . .

I believe Tarbell is from about 1927.It started out as a home coorespondence course for people with disposable incomes and extra time on thier hands. When the depression hit, the books got set aside for awhile and were later purchased from a different publishing company and re-marketed in the later 30's.It was the standard for all magicians at the time. Any magician that is over 60 probably has the set. The volume 8 did not come out till the 60's after someone had discovered notes in an old briefcase after Tarbell past away.I may be off a little on the dates but this is the story I heard. It is a must have.
"Hey... How'd you do that?".
