Where can I find some half-doller size Chinese Coins? I know Johnson makes them, but at $12.50 each, that's way too expensive.

Magicsmith sell them in a variety of sizes and colours. The pewter ones are about $9.00 and the coloured ones are about $7.00

The Johnson Chinese coins are utter crap. They are really thick, really rough, and the printing is off centre to the hole on the one I bought. They are a total rip off. Avoid them.
If it's not important that they are Chinese then I would go to a coin shop and look through the foreign coins - I got some East African 10 cent coins for less than $1 each. They are copper coins much like the English Penny, exactly the same size as half dollars with a circular hole in the middle, dating from the 40's and 50's. And they are real coins! I was actually looking for the African 1 cent coins Curtis used in POS 1, so it seems bizarre that the African 10c and 1c coin should be virtually identical in size and appearance?! You can change the patter to suit the African coins, such as other hemisphere instead of other side of the world. |

I agree with Andy. The Johnson one look fake and are too thick. The hole is also round. The Magicsmith ones (non coloured) look better and have a square hole. Similarly, I don't use Chinese coins, I use East African dimes but they're not dollar size.
I am also on the look out for real brass coloured coins (not necessarily Chinese) that are half dollar sized, so if anyone can recommend a suitable currency... |

I thought he wanted half dollar size?
For dollar size the magicsmith ones are the ones to go for, they look really nice and are really thin. Here's something you might find useful: if you are doing an "international" routine the African coin looks identical to the English Penny edge on and even with a casual show of the face (with fingers covering hole obviously)... I found a use for this in one of my own routines. |

Wow! The pewter ones do look pretty nice!
I'll be on the lookout for East African 10 cent coins next time I'm at the coin shop. Thank you both! |

Todd Lassen has genuine ancient Chinese coins the size of half dollars. I don't know if he'll sell them individually (he makes gimmicked coins with them), but you can contact him to find out. My guess is they won't be cheap, and my advice to you is to save up until you can afford them. Why not buy the best, and just save if you can't buy them right now? P.S. - He made me a Chinatown Half with one of the coins, that comes apart with a bang ring for easy insertion of any background color. The workmanship would bring tears to your eyes.

Todd Lassen's coins are the best. But he is so busy, I usually need to wait two months for my coins.

I bought some pewter chinese coins long time ago from Tannen's. Did not like them at all.
It is merely the "feel" and defenitely the sound of thses coins that are wrong. Or I should say: lack of sound. IMHO from all the chinese coins I had in my hands, the pewter ones I liked less... You guys are right about the Johnson's also. I have a couple of older ones that are very nice, but also two newer coins that are off-centre. I think the round hole is for (technical)magician-purposes an advantage. When you hold two coins as one, or if you use a chinese-shell, they will instant allign, which is not the case with a square hole.

Leigh are these the coins you are using http://www.rings-things.com/Catalog_Pages/077.htm ? If so can you tell me a bit about there handeling i.e. do they have about the same feel as half dollars or are they thinne/thicker or working more like soft coins? The ones Todd Lassens uses in his CSB sets would be great i've been hunting for these on the internet for a while but until now only got bad deals in which the coins that arrived where very thin and tottally not that what i expected it to be.

Amon-Re, the East African coins I use are identical to the British Penny in size, colour, thickness and weight, the only difference is that it has a round hole in the centre of the coin. The British Penny (and the East African 10 cents) is a hair larger than a half dollar but is slightly thinner, hence lighter. The coins I use are not soft at all, just normal usage, but that's never been a problem in this routine.
You can see the coin on Todd Lassen's site he has a picture of the "Ultimate Copper Silver Brass" - My coins are about as worn as the picture, but I don't shine them. http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/klarentz/csb2.jpg I, too, would like this very CSB set - VERY nice. |

No one in China use those Chinese coins again. Believe me. Those are just money making gimmick.
In China and Hong Kong, magicians are searching for US half dollar coins. It sell for US$2.50 for each half dollar coin here! See, different places have different demand and supply model.
