On December 27, 2006, I predicted:
__________ 7. The Economy The slump in the U.S. housing market will drag on, leading many to speak of a crisis. Falling home prices, together with adjustable-rate mortages and high interest rates, will squeeze many homeowners additionally burdened with credit-card debt. The number of foreclosures will reach a level not seen in many years. As the slump continues, there will be widespread speculation about the impact on financial markets, together with calls to ease interest rates. Finally, crude oil prices will top $80 per barrel, tipping the U.S. economy into recession. __________ On August 1, 2007, crude oil closed at $78.77 per barrel before retreating in the following days. The period of time from late July to date (August 9) has been marked by a sharp pullback in the stock market, largely in response to what is being referred to as the subprime lending crisis, in which mortgage loans to the least creditworthy customers have shown an unexpectedly high rate of default, leading to record numbers of foreclosures. Many experts predict that the crisis will grow worse. Because these loans were securitized, the subprime lending crisis has had the effect of squeezing credit markets, pressuring private equity firms that had been supporting high stock prices. At this week's meeting of the Federal Reserve, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke noted the effects of the subprime lending crisis, but still signaled that inflation was the main danger, holding the Fed funds rate at 5.25%. History will judge whether this was the correct response. Yours, Paul |

This will end up being the worst year ever for the dollar. The sub-prime mess will just worsen. The Fed will cut interest rates for the first time in several years by the end of the year. As the stock market starts looking shaky, so much money will be taken out and placed in other currencies that earn a higher rate (and are more stable) by foreign investors that have bought US stocks because the dollar is cheap, that the stock market will have it's biggest decline points-wise ever.

The Fed cut the discount rate from 6.25 percent to 5.75 percent today, sending stocks skyward. Yours, Paul |

Here's an update on prediction 7, cited above.
Yours, Paul __________ Mortgage woes push foreclosures to record (Associated Press, 9/06/2007) WASHINGTON - The number of homeowners receiving foreclosure notices hit a record high in the spring, driven by problems with subprime mortgages. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported Thursday that mortgage-holders starting the foreclosure process in the April-June quarter reached 0.65 percent, marking the third consecutive quarter that this figure has set an all-time high. The delinquency rate, which tracks the number of people who are behind in their payments but have not yet entered the foreclosure process, was also up sharply during the spring, rising to 5.12 percent of all loans, up nearly three-fourths of a percentage point from the same period a year ago. |
