I believe that Rope Hectic (two words) was written by Harold Rice and edited by John Braun. Keith Clark wrote Rope Royale. There are copies available on Amazon.com right now.
And... Jose's last name is, I believe, De La Torre. I believe that some of his material is available on Meir Yedid's Web Site. ( http://www.mymagic.com ) Dennis Loomis

What's really amazing is the fact that I have a totally original gag with a piece of rope that kills and nobody has ripped it off (that I know of)!!!

Okay, Pete, we're all happy to oblige here on the Café. Tell us your gag and we'll be happy to rip it off. ;-)

Dear Al Angelo
You seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of this area al. Could I pick your brains? I wonder if you could direct me to the best sources of information on your two heroes of rope: Dennis Loomis, and Shageo Takagi's. Only stuff that I can order - no obscure tapes that one has to die after viewing. I would really appreciate it. All the best Prof. Alexander
I met this chap at the Olympics. I said to him, "Excuse me but are you a pole vaulter?" he replied "No, I'm German, but how did you know my name was Walter?"

Sure professor
Dennis Loomis can be PMed here, or http://www.loomismagic.com Shigeo Takagi died in the 1990's, and I have a VHS tape of his rope work in Japanese. I heard that Stevens magic had a few old dusty coppies some time ago, but I don't know. The trick that he did better than anyone before or after, that I've been raving about is "the Vishnu rope mystery" which you can find a stripped down version in the Karl Fulves "self-working rope magic" book on page 77. I am not an expert, just a student, and lover of rope magic. I have made many posts at this forum about other rope routines that are head, and shoulders above the rest. Anytime I can be of service to you don't hesitate to PM me. Al Angello

Hi
Thanks for the help Al,I'll follow up these leads. Much appreciated. Magicgrandpa I was very interested in your description of your performance of the Tabury routine, especially about where it went 'wrong' for you. How did you get to the point where you joined the ropes together? One of the strongest effects in the routine is when you (seemingly) loop the short piece of rope over the continuous loop of rope and as you pull it apart the rope becomes a full length of rope again (I find this always sparks automatic applause and gasps. I am trying to find a way to get to this bit without doing the knot with the rope in the pocket and when I read your piece thought you might have cracked it.... have you? All the best Prof. Alexander

If you buy the Loomis DVD get some of Dennis's rope, and expect to practice it for a couple months before you're ready to perform it. I added a few ring moves to my routine just to make it about 6 minute long, but grandpa is the real master of this one. Al Angello

Prof.
It was all I could do at the time. I simply untied the knot after picking it up off the floor and went directly to the "putting the ends back on the rope" bit. I skipped the knot with rope in the pocket bit entirely out of necessity. I guess I "cracked it" as you say but only because I had no choice. As I said I no longer perform the routine publicly, but LEARNING it is an education in rope magic that would benefit any magician. Also, as I stated, I have cannibalized some of the moves for my own routine.

I highly recommend checking out Ted Lesley's "Comedy Rope Trick" routine on L&L's World's Greatest Magic Professional Rope Routines dvd. His laid back absent-minded old world professor performance style is a joy to watch (and learn from).
For some reason, the old classic "Rope Through Neck" always kills, perhaps because of its simplicity. The audience can viscerally relate to one's possible decapitation! |

I appreciate Al's comments about my DVD and my Knot Routine. Let me clarify one thing, however. The routine is a series of knots and flourishes that you do with just a single piece of rope. Also on the DVD are many more such effects. There are many individual effects which you can incorporate into your rope work, and certainly many of them will not take two months to learn. Certainly there are some things you can master in a weekend.
Of course, there are some challenging things as well. If you want to do the Will Rogers Snapping of a knot with both hands at the same time, that will take some doing. Thanks to Al and Grandpa for their nice comments. Dennis Loomis
