A lot of people have been asking me what I have been doing with my time since I stopped actively performing in August. Well, I started writing a book called Theatrical Magic. It is a book of original theatrical scripts for close-up and stage magic, and focuses on original ideas and stories for well known commercially available tricks and illusions. Much of the material was developed during the 5-6 years that I was writing material for "Big Daddy Cool" and Swingin' At The Roxy.
I am writing and illustrating the book (most people don't know that I am also an illustrator) and Bill Palmer is serving as the editor. I am including one chapter called "Other Voices" that includes contributions from Palmer, Jason Michaels and a never before published routine from Eugene Poinc! Jason Michaels said "This is too good to publish. Really, this could become a sourcebook on this subject." Thanks for the praise Jason! The book is planned for a Summer 2007 release - we are still looking for a publisher, but I am making a FREE Sneak Peek available to anyone who wants it. It is a .pdf file that I will be happy to e-mail to you. Just send me a request for the Sneak Peek at johnpyka@flip-side.com and I'll get it right out to you! |

I've recently seen the promo for it on the Leaping Lizard's magic site as well. It looks as though it really rocks! I know I plan to get a copy, and one of the Devil of a Bar And Pub as well. Two publications that will fare well for all performers.

Thanks for the links...did check it out and enjoyed reading the detailed BDC scripts. Was put off a bit by the explanation of why folks left the cast of the show. Still, thanks for sharing this info.

I JUST was introduced to the whole bizarre/ storytelling genre (seems to be a blurry line) and discovered some of the previews from this publisher. I am intrigued by some of the samples I read, and when I can get to a dealer I plan to order this and the magi-tales book. They sound really interesting and promising. Why is it, as we get older, we get more interested in theory than new tricks I wonder? Laziness or wisdom?

I felt like it was important to put my career path into perspective, but I am fully aware that not everyone will agree. That's actually part of the creative process - to spark debate about ideas/ideals. |

Since the topic is Storytelling, and since our life's are just... stories, I particularly enjoyed the background on your career path.
Am interested in picking this book up after reading the sample portion. RevJohn |
