Great stuff... Sadly, when Charles Reynolds and I sat down with Percy Press (the elder) and taped a looooooooooong conversation with him, Charles later found that his recorder was screwed up and the tape was blank. Argh... Anyway, nice to hear some of the history.

Prince Konology, Joe Squinters, Solly Kent...more names that come to mind. The year of the Garden competition...same year John Lenahan worked the Garden...followed by his lecture and video on street magic. OK, I will shut up now!!! Ken |

I really liked the act, but I noticed that in both YouTube clips the spectators were underwhelmed by the restoration of the cut rope. I would have thought it would get better reactions. Perhaps they were amazed, but didn't vocalise it. Is this normal?

The American line always got a big laugh. I think they think of us like cowboys with cars.
The guy off the street line, not too much; mostly funny to Americans....buskers have a little more respectability in Europe than America. The footage was on a lady's cell phone. There wasn't really a time period....some of us would do 15 or 20 min., some would do 30 or 40 proper circle shows, in which case I would try and do 2 shows to their one... It was some times competitive, and bickering might ensue. I dunno, it was a typical pitch sharing experience I guess. Thanks, Kondini, I heard so many rumors it was hard to figure out what was goin' on. People showed me real old murals and drawings and paintings, and said that that was the pitch.... I know there was a time when the Garden was tryin' to get magi off the pitch, and the fellas argued with them, sayin' it had been theirs for 500 yrs, etc., etc. I dunno....us Americans aren't too good at our own history. It was hard for me to figure yours out... Any way, true or not, I prefer the mystique. Thank you. |

Oh, to answer the rope thing...they where underwhelmed 'cause I was doin' it wrong.
The sleight was OK, but the revelation was weak. So I've corrected it through patter and presentation, and now they're laughing or ahhhhing. Eric Evans and Toot caught the error and showed me how to correct it....thanks for the confirmation, though. I had forgotten all about it. |

Having said that, Jimmy, English people don't react like you Americans! (It's always nice to have a few Americans in your crowd, although Spanish and Italians also liven things up.)

Jimmy - The reason why I asked about the rope is that sometimes I get a similar reaction doing the same move - maybe surprise and an audible catch in the breath, but not applause or exclamation. Would you care to tell me how to correct it??

Yee-haw! Hold my beer, I'm gonna try and make this turn. [Billy Bob's last words before he went home to meet his maker.]
And Dominick, that would be "Well...ain't y'all?" Sometimes I gotta help Dominick out with his English, 'cause he's from another country....'cause I read books and stuff. So anyway, the rope thing.... In the patter, I say something like this: "We'll cut the rope into two equal pieces, so that the two ropes are now the same size at the bottom." [cut] I bring attention to the bottom of the now two ropes, which are way off in length, then I say, "Well, the two ropes are not the same length....here, I'll start over." [restore] Then I hold the rope up by one end [hiding gaff] with the other end laying on the ground, and I -pause- I begin stroking the rope and pulling it to show it's solid. Then I say, "Some of us saw that, some of us didn't." -pause- "I'll do it again, but pay attention this time!" Admittedly it still leaves a lot for improvement, but at least now there's no lull in that part of the show. Dr. Street, aka Nick Sharp, showed me to hold it up and pause. I would like to add that Dominick is right, the English are very reserved spectators. But I was having the same sort of reaction everywhere else. It would be interesting to see the reaction now in London after the correction of the trick. Another thing I should mention, David Walker told me once to only use one syllable words the spectators can understand....meaning for this situation, your audience is not as smart as it thinks it is, but smarter than you think it is.....I think. One more thing to my American friends, remember the audiences in Europe are a lot sharper, but less verbally critical. You might be the last to know you suck. But not so in our beloved country. We have the table manners of a pig in heat...it's a good thing we have all the bombs.....we put a rocket on the moon, us! I think this may work for us, though, 'cause the heckler is like a mirror and a line book all rolled up into one. Some of us can't even do our show without a heckler. Sorry I strayed off the post topic, I talkalot. |

Did you only do one show a day? That is, one time slot of 40 min.? Or did you & the other 2 rotate all day? I ask because I've seen the CG performane areas & the outdoor pitch was HUGE, but all the performers there were jugglers or funambulists. So is that area (in your vid) a 'magician's corner'?
BTW, cool show!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Um no thas the big piazza.
magician's corner is at the mouth of james street just as you enter cg proper. we rotate over and over. I was doin a 20min and a couple of the other guys did the same time. sometimes some acts are 40mins and if thier nice they let the smaller acts go twice or rotate 2 small acts twice and then theirs cuz its the same length of time. its a little bigger than a side walk pitch.....if you watched my vid I was facing the big piazza to my left a half block up. usually the bigger magic [gazzo style]40min acts work the big piazza, but have been know to come to magic's pitch when they need to do more shows inna day. |
