I remember back in the 1970's taking my girlfriend to the Magic Townhouse in NYC.We saw many performances on different occasions...she,as a non practioner became restless if a set was over 15-20 minutes[so did I]. I think 15-20 minutes of entertainment...is adequate in most scenario's.This of course could be extended..if the situation warranted[such as a single performer doing a formal close-up show]. I am a great believer in 'less is more', and always 'leave them wanting more'. Best. Rich |

I do a formal close-up magic show that lasts an hour, but I only do it when people come to the venue SPECIFICALLY to see magic.
If I'm "the entertainment" at an evening function or something like that, I'll cap it off at 30 minutes. And listen to Rafael, who does one of my favourite cups and balls routines. |

Always remember what Nate Leipzig said. "When the first lady in the audience starts to look bored, that's when you should stop."

Not close-up, but a Nevada review show. I was brought in to do a week and the stage manager asked me to do 12 minutes. My comedy club set usually ran 17 minutes, so I figured what to cut. When I came off stage the stage manager pulled me over and said, "I can't believe it, you did exactly 12 minutes." I said, "That's what you asked me to do." He then said, "That's what I told all the other magicians that worked that spot and NONE OF THEM CAME CLOSE, all running way over and the dancers all stood around waiting to go on at the time they were supposed to."
So, do what is asked.
