Has any one built the suspension in the back of Mark Wilson's Book? How much weight does that thing hold. Will I be able to float an adult?
Thanks for your help. nola |

You can build it strong enough to hold an adult, but you will need heavier material and welding. I think the way it is built maybe 125lbs top, can't remember, you can email mark and ask him, he may take a bit answering due to schedule, but he and nani are good about answering such questions. You can get his contact info for email or snail mail at his site http://www.markwilsonmagic.com

Thanks Guys! I've been doing a great deal of research on the suspension illusion and am preparing to build this summer. All tips and tricks and bits of advice are welcome and appreciated. Thanks again!

Biggest concern is the balance point. This is really impacted by the weight you are applying to the gimmick.

Well, I am trying to apply several designs into one that matches what I want in a suspension. I don't necessarily want to build it in front of the audience, but that would be nice and I have found plans that allow that to take place. I just want something that looks simple and magical. Obviously portability is a concern so I need the thing to break down. I also would prefer not to have a backdrop so hiding the gimmick becomes an issue. Proving that there is no support is another issue - I have to think about hoops. If I could afford the Blaney things I'd be right in line but I am in the design stage of a modest illusion show so I don't have a lot to spend. I have studied suspensions for a long time and have many many plans that I have drawn up over a period of several years. My nose has been buried in The Encyclopedia of Suspensions and Levitations for a while and I have watched the Blaney videos over and over as well as other suspensions. I wish I could get my hands on that Harbin Book but that's not gonna happen. So necessity is the mother of invention. I'll spend this summer building mock ups and eventually (hopefully in one try)have a finished illusion. I just hope by the end of it all I don't spend more on the project than the cost of a Ladder Levitation. Balance points are a super big issue. I once saw footage of a magician who was floating a girl in the air and she was sorta top heavy and the board she was floating on tipped over and sure it was funny but that guy wasn't thinking about balance at all! Poor girl must have had a head ache for days!
That's pretty much it -advice and suggestions and theories and sources and what not are greatly appreciated. Thanks to every one at the Café for being so helpful. By the way Photius I emailed Mr. Wilson -haven't received a response yet but I was strangely honored at just the idea of Mark Wilson reading my little email I hope he responds. Thanks for the advice. nola |

Harbin book did not have that much on levitation/suspensions, so don't even worry about not seeing it.
Search for other threads here on the Café for suspensions and levitation, lots of info (secrets) given. As a note, I do not use a hoop for any of my levitations or suspensions at the moment. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!" Http://www.shazzamshow.com

Good advice. I have gone through the threads on this board over and over and it has been a very helpful journey. I'm really multi-tasking my but off and putting together several things at once this site has been very helpful. Honestly people all over the net talk trash about this board and I gotta tell ya this place is loaded with great info. Very helpful. I've been a lurker here for a while now and only recently started posting because I am at a stage that requires active and interactive research. This has been a great resource and so far the people I have communicated with have been great.
No hoops. I've thought of that too. Man that Blaney hoop is like candy and I'm the kid in the candy store wishing I had a nickel, ya know? The hoop really isn't necessary and I realize that, but darn in I want one! ()LOL As I understand it, the Harbin Book did have the Super-x Plus. Sure it's easy to figure out with just a bit of concentrated effort, but it would be nice to see the original plans from the guy that came up with what is essentially the genesis of Blaney's work. nola |

Depending on where you are performing, why even bother with a hoop.
ie. If performing outside, why would you pass a hoop around a girl floating?? Wires from a helicopter?? I hope you understand what I am getting at. What are you trying to prove, and to who. Does the hoop, or whatever you use, add anything to the performance, or the illusion. Think about the whys. (Other than the fact that YOU like the hoop, and the $$$ tag) Jack Gwynne used to pass two ungimmicked hoops over his floatee. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

Sure it's all about the perception of the audience. I understand what your saying perfectly. A hoop is like having someone sign the ambitious card. For the most part it's unnecessary.

Or, how many performers turn the Crsytal Casket around, after they have already walked around it. You can see through th d--n thing, why the overkill???
OR, once covered why do you have to turn it around again. We all know the reason, so come up with something else to fill the void. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"
