Hey guys.. I have a show coming up on the 9th, and Ihave basically everything worked out except for the ending.. I am going to finish with the Gene Anderson T&R Newspaper, and then as the kicker ending, produce a dove..
I want something that will hit home, and already tried the crumpling of the newspaper and production of the dove, and also the IDH in which you fold the newspaper up, and produce the dove on the newspaper.. I don't like either for this particular ending.. I was thinking somewhere along the lines of this: (Done with an IDH) - Restoring the newspaper, but one piece of newspaper about 8"x3" falls out of the paper as it is restored.. I don't even take any notice to it as it falls.. I show the paper page by page, and then notice on the last page I show (the front page) that there is a piece ripped out from the corner.. I look on the floor and notice that the piece on the floor is the missing corner to the paper.. I put the newspaper to the side and go down to pick up the piece.. I come up with it, and show it is ripped kind of like a diamond, and I do that 'bird wing flapping thing' that Burton does when he does the Corner Tear.. Then, I stop the paper flapping action, and immedietly turn to my left, extend my arms, and the piece turns into the dove.. (The production is that of the one Dave Womach teaches on his Secrets of Dove Magic when he produces the dove while turning left so that it gives the illusion of being away from the body) I am kind of left dirty though, because I just crumple the piece in my hand as I produce the dove.. But I don't think the audience will really notice it, as they are not looking for the paper, but rather thiking about how it turned into a dove. =] I would appreciate any help you guys could give me, and any advice how I could make this ending better, or if its good the way it is... I kind of like the idea of the bird shapped piece falling out, so if you guys have any suggestions of how I could produce the dove from the paper from a different way that I described above, please let me know.. Thanks guys! -Vinnie |

Go for it! And don't feel dirty about the paper in your hand. Ditch it as you put the dove away or just carry it off beneath the dove. Who's brave enough to pick up his tail to look for it?

Thanks Spellbinder.. Glad you like it.. I also had the idea in mind to take the piece and rip it up, then throw the torn pieces up, and produce the dove (As Tony Clark does in Unmasks with the tissue), but I feel that the tearing up of it wouldnt make much sense.. I like the above method better anyways..

The missing piece can be flash paper. Light the piece of paper. Soon as it goes out produce the dove. It must be with perfect timing.

That would be a big piece of flashpaper. You would also have to rubber stamp all over it to make it resemble newspaper. It's going to burn more slowly than a small piece of flash paper, so you have two problems- #1 lighting it and #2 timing it. I think because time is short, go with your first plan and just think about flash paper for awhile. You don't need additional problems to solve at this stage in your rehearsal.

Just a thought and I am not sure of your stylings so don't know if it would work, but you could make believe the dove did "something natural" in/to your hand and reach into your pocket for a hankerchief (dump the paper), to clean the alleged mess in more ways than one!

Hokus, thanks for the idea, but in this case, since it is the end of the performance and I am going to walk off stage after that, I don't feel its necessary.. But great thinking if it was at the beginning or middle of an act!!
And I like the flash paper idea, but yeah, that would take a long time to burn.. I'll think about it and try to come up with something if I can.. -Vinnie |
