People of the magic comunity, hear me please, (actually read me)
what can we do about people exposing secrets in you tube. I could find a way to bring the site down, for a couple of days, but that illegal, unsave, and temporary. or we could go and beat the ***s down, but traveling all over the world to do bandalism is not cheap or fun. so any ideas.... (i did a quick search and didn't find anything related to this topic, if there is pardon me and please rederect me) |

"bandalism"? To do any such thing is in very bad taste. What you can do is ask the poster to take a video "private" - "by invitation only" and please ask them nicely.
Just as you don't feel it is right or proper to have any magic secrets exposed on public video, others likely feel the same about books in public libraries, bookstores or even magic shops that non-magicians can go to. By your reasoning there would be very bad things happening ... Now let's get to YouTube itself. Same as you don't like exposure of magic tricks, there are other folks on the world who feel it improper to discuss certain kinds of food, or to show women dressed in ways that show their full face. Do we want YouTube shut down for showing a news photo? If not by others for other people's equally legitimate reasons, then why should it be shut down for showing something we happen to disapprove of? As things are, unless the video is TAKEN FROM a copyrighted source without permission it is pretty much fair game to post any non-violent, non sexually-explicit clip up there... so be it. Now if you are suggesting that you are ready to shut down the internet magic shops, magic shops, public libraries etc to protect magic secrets... you have my attention. I must remind you that harming other people is a very bad thing to do no matter how noble your intentions.

Well I have to admit I was exagerating a little bit. I cant take the site down or go around the world . but I mean it is really disgusting what some people post. things like the snap change or the pass, there is reason to reveal a secret like that to the general public, exept if you wnat to launch a direct attact to the art itself.

Right... non-kosher food. Indecently clothed women. Discussions criticizing the government...
so many reasons to shut it down. so much indecent content do we really want to burn the library at Alexandria again because some folks insist on explaining magic tricks to the public?

Well, I am in complete agreement with Jonathan. Youtube exposers have every right to post a video of themselves teaching a trick if that is what they wish.
Youtube has "NO" policy regarding magic exposure and do not currently have any intentions on ammending current policy. Personally, I applaud Youtube's decision, not to bend to all this trite whining. Ismael, there is already a many page thread regarding this, a few posts down http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&273 |

"There are no bad students, just bad teachers."
"Many are called, few are chosen." I say we re teach those who simply act on WHATEVER THEY FEEL. Maybe they just need some direction. (some guidance) Hopefully if we approach it properly, we can explain to them the responsibility that comes with such power (magic blessing). And, what a true honor it is to be chosen for magic, let alone called for it.

So it would be okay for me to post a video describing in detail the workings of Steve Fearson's Laser Illusion? David Copperfield apparently paid for exclusive rights to that effect. So in essence, it's copyrighted material which without consent is illegal to post on youtube. So is Koznitsky's Cigarette up Nose. Must be many others. Wouldn't that list also include anything that first appeared in a copyrighted book? Doesn't it all fall under intellectual property?
Just playing Devil's Advocate here. I don't believe the exposure as it currently exists is even a minor threat. However I do believe there is a danger of somebody making a household name for himself (ala masked magician) where everyone knows to simply punch in a his name on youtube and 1000s upon 1000s of videos pop up featuring him (alphabetically or by category) explaining away secret after secret. Hasn't happened yet. But there's no reason it couldn't. There's an obvious motive behind it.

To post in your own words how it is done is not. to use the equipment Copperfield is patent infringment, to use your own to get a similiar result is not, unless the construction is identical. |

Can we please stop the You Tube phobia?
My god is this crap getting old. You didn't find a related topic to this? Just restrict the magic content right? So now freedoms we enjoy are going to be restricted according to what YOU want? Man find someone to explain "slippery slope" to you please.

Platt have someone explain "irony" to you please.
Ironically the more whining and complaining done by alledged magicians, the worse we look in the long run.

Thanks Danny. I'd agree that the more we whine the worse we look. But I don't see irony in that fact. Seems logical and straightforward to me. However it is ironic that you whine about this thread but continue to visit it and post on it.
