This is truly a collectible prop. There are plenty of jumbo coins out there, but this is genuinely an exceptional piece. It is available (I believe exclusively) through Brad Burt at http://www.magicshop.com. Here is some of what Brad says on his site:
"The Sudbury Penny produced by the now defunct Sudbury Mint in Canada is a legendary magic prop. The original coins were made to be sold in novelty shops, but were outlawed by the U.S. Treasury and most of these wonderful coins were destroyed. Magicians, myself included, looked EVERYWHERE for Sudbury pennies. They looked Great. They felt Great. They were simply the best coin of its type ever produced... ...Well, I took the plunge. Over a year ago I put into motion what needed to be done to have a copy of the Sudbury penny produced. It has taken a ton of time and ton of money, but I have them and they are ready for sale!!! Note: This is a limited run and I honestly don't know if I will ever produce them again. These are BETTER than the Sudbury original. Why? Because they are even CLEANER than the original. Nothing on them about Sudbury, etc. They look, feel, smell, whatever....like the original. I am very, very pleased to offer these to the magic community!" So Brad pretty much explains it. I like this prop for Greg Wilson’s Pitch and Ditch routine from Off The Cuff, and if you play with any of Jay Sankeys coin sleights, you will no doubt find some great applications for this penny. It really has a nice weight and feel, it simply is exactly what a giant penny should look, feel, and yes, smell like. It’s one of those cool props that spectators relish examining. There no doubt are other cheaper pennies out there, but if you are for high quality presentation, you need this coin. Cost is $35.00 USD, and I believe it is exclusively available through Brad Burt’s http://www.magicshop.com. Very recently a magic Café member, DStachowiak, recommended that I check out "Super Cents" by Jerry Mentzer, and he was right. This book is a collection of effects with the Sudbury II Penny; the best part is that it is only $5.95!! from Brad Burt at http://www.magicshop.com. It's a small booklet, only 13 effects with some variations, but there is some great material. If it is requested I will put up a review of the booklet too (I have to finish the last two effects first). Matt Monte

I've heard the story about it being "outlawed by the U.S. Treasury" before but I don't know if it's true or not (although the U.S. Treasury really can't outlaw things. Congress has to do that.). It's legal to make copies of U.S. money as long as the size is a specified amount bigger or smaller than the actual money. Quote:

I curious (seriously) as to what needs to be done to make it legal to do something that's been outlawed? I'm not saying it's just advertising hype, but unless someone knows the full story that's what is sounds like to me. |

You would have to email Brad to get the details on the production process. There have definitely been other silver dollar pennies, but like I said in the review, this is the best one I have seen. This is a high quality prop, if you use the plastic painted Jumbo coins, or the usual plated replicas then stick with what you like.
I think you are looking far to deeply into this.

You are taking offense, perhaps my wording was wrong.
These coins are of great quality, and in your 40 years of purchasing I am sure you have seen many flawed coins. If you search the forums about Jumbo coins, there are many magicians here that want flawless jumbo coins, from detail, and weight, to the mill work on the edges. The Sudbury is no where near the most expensive Jumbo coin out there, and it is of great quality. Email Brad and see if you can return the coin if you are unhappy with it, because if you are like me, then not until you hold it in your hands will you know if it was worth your money.

I have a wonderful 50C size penny with the marking E Pluribus Orwell on the tail side. Anyone know who made it? And I have ordered the Sudbury II Penny!

The Orwell Penny was created by magician Barry Brilliant in 1984 for use as a unique coin when doing a color changing coin (Spellbound) or for use in an Okito coin box. This dollar size coin is solid copper and has been machined by Palmer Magic to be exactly the same size as a IKE silver dollar coin. It fits perfectly under a dollar size shell and in a dollar Okito box. This rare coin has not been for sale for over 15 years. It is in limited supply and will not be remade.
Notice that on the back of the coin the "E Pluribus Unum" has been replaced by "E Pluribus Orwell." It was George Orwell who wrote the book "1984" about how Big Brother government controls the thoughts of the public. $18.00 That was taken from http://www.palmermagic.com/ it's a little past halfway down the page.
