I haven't got as far as thinking about how to use Hindu ring on rope; certainly it would have to be part of something else. I was just impressed by its apparent "impossibility", certainly compared to many of the other effects on the DVD. And it is also impromptu and ungimmicked.
As for using it with Dean's Box, I think it's a lot more magical than the method Dean Dill himself uses, which struck me as obvious the first time I saw it, and of course it's used like this in the original Stewart James Sefalaljia routine. Spellbinder has some useful thoughts and tips on this in his Sefalaljia revisted manuscript. And as for the Collins CNR method, I just wish I could see it!

However, it is not explained on the DVD, just demonstrated. However, as John Long was able to do, by examining the moves carefully, a magician with some rope experience can probably reconstruct it. That will have to do until I can get permission to publish it (along with a bunch of other Ted Collins' tricks and subtleties gleaned from his family, other students, and store demonstrators).

I always figure if I get ONE good, usable IDEA from a book or DVD, the cost is justifiable. Of course, I no longer have a wife nagging me to watch my expenses, may she rest in peace and not come back to haunt me.
I just purchased Ian Adair's Dove Encyclopedia Volume #5 (and yes, I'll be adding the index to the Web site) and found TWO good, usable ideas, so I consider that a great purchase. I'm still looking for Volume # 4... anyone?...anyone? ...Ferris?

Volume 2 of Bruce Cervon's "Ultra Cervon" video/dvd has a great multiple cut and restored rope routine using in part the Vishnu cut. He explains it quite well.

Does he do his Vishnu cut in a seamless arc, because I was very disappointed with Daryl's move. Al Angello

I just watched Daryl's and Bruce Cervon's Vishnu Cut to compare. Yes, the difference is subtle. Daryl appears to move his left thumb into place to pinch the part of the rope brought up by the scissors. This movement is unnecessary as the upward sweep of the scissors puts it right where the thumb can take it without movement. Perhaps this is why it does not appear "seamless" to you.
You must measure out with the scissors, bring the rope back, do the move, cut it immediately and drop the cut end. it must be performed in one sweeping motion without any "knitting" motion of the scissors. Incidentally, this is one more reason I round the points of ALL my scissors. You can do this cut in an offhand manner without even looking IF the points have been rounded. I can't think of any rope effect requiring sharp points on a scissors. The seamless arc you refer to is only possible if you are not worried about sticking the scissors in your hand, which is a definite possibility without rounded points. Incidentally, the logic for not cutting it when you have it measured out with the scissors is that the cut part would fall on the floor. The Bob Ellis Vishnu Cut is in my estimation the most natural method of all.

Yea
We are on the same page. I bought a pair of $35 scissors, took them to the knife sharpening place, and had the point rounded for safety. The Shigeo Takagi move is done by gripping the rope with the scisors, have the left hand swinging down, and the right hand moving up to meet the left hand in front of the chest, while the top half of the body is twisting slightly to the right, which not only makes for a seamless arc, but all of the dirty business is totally conceiled by the three moves happening together. You are right in order to do it correctly you must scrape the point of the scissors against the last three fingers of the left hand. Takagi also creates a diversion with his scissors, triming the ends, and waveing them around like a magic wand. If you lived near me I'de invite you over to watch the master Shigeo Takagi create magic, with just scissors, and rope. Al Angello

Well, after reading all the posts here last night, and getting RE-EXCITED about Rope Magic again, I put on Vol. 3 of Daryl's Rope magic to watch both the Vishnu Rope Mystery and the Panama Rope Mystery.
As much as I HIGHLY respect Daryl as a magician, he is clearly not a 'master' of rope tricks, and as Al mentioned, does not do a good routine of either Vishnu or Panama Rope tricks. I actually got away from these 'actual' cut and restored rope tricks years ago, as I got tired of going through so much rope. I always started with 6', so the shorter length wouldn't be so noticeable. These days I am more geared toward other rope tricks, that don't require actual cutting, but also incorporate a small ring. I LOVE Ring and Rope magic, so am studying that field right now, again. I am working on putting together a 7 phase routine. I may consider purchasing Fiber Optic, just for a few of the moves. However, at this point, I am mostly interested in learning Full Circle, which seems to have received for the most part, GOOD REVIEWS. There is a couple kids doing it on youtube, and I think magicvideodepot, and I can pretty much learn it from watching them. Al: reading all your posts especially, has gotten me feeling passionate about the ropes again. As you say, they pack so small, but play so BIG. I'm also working hard on a 7 - 10 minute Sponge Ball/Bunny routine. Anyway, SO GLAD I found you guys on here, who talk ROPE MAGIC. This Café is SO amazing, when you want to get INSPIRED! It does my heart good to know all of my endless babelings has been appreciated, and feel free to PM me for any further help I can provide. Someone just made a post that they recently purchased Full Circle in a Chicago magic shop. They stopped making that tape back in the 1990's, so you would be very lucky to find a copy. The inventors obviously don't belong th the magic Café, and have no idea how full circle, and fiber optics seamlessly fit together. That youtube version of FO is very sloppy. HAVE FUN Al Angello

Al: You are quite right; the version of F.C. on Youtube is quite sloppy. That's why I will be able to learn it, pretty much, from watching that. First thing I must do is get some good 100% cotton rope, that doesn't need 'coring'.
I'll definitely keep in touch Al, and more than likely, 'pick your brain', lol. Cheers.....smitty |
