I've been searching the archives here, and I've never really found any information regarding costumes, both custom made and off the rack.
I am aware of people like Betty Reilly in Las Vegas, but where else can a person find someone that sells costumes? And to speed the thread along, let's leave out: * Ask a local tailor * Go to your local university theater department Thanks in advance! Chris |

Hi Chris,
It depends on what kind of costumes you want your assistant(s) to be wearing. Many assistants are dancers and there are dance studios that carry clothing lines for them. Other sources include upscale or cutting edge dress shops. They often carry dresses or outfits that look great on stage. If you are looking for something custom, then you may need to visit a tailor (I know you didn't want to hear that). I'm very fortunate, Pat, my wife and assistant, makes most of our costumes. Hope that helps some. All the best, Rob |

Chris,
One of the closest sources of finished goods is a dancing school teacher. Catalogs are sent to them. The closest source of ideas is the pattern book section of WalMart! Good Luck! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Band Directors get costume books for their colorguard. Some of it is really "marching band" like..but some of it is cool looking costumes. That's my 2 pennies.

I have had a lot of luck with ebay and dance catalogs. I have gotten some awesome costumes with crystals and rhinestones for reallly cheap and in wonderful shape. Kelle Dance Company has some of the nicest and most unique costumes. They have a website, http://www.kelledance.com that shows their various lines. Hope this helps!

Michael:
Thanks for the link. This is exactly what the type of source I was looking for. Not just a dance leotard supplier, but a company that makes actual competition/stage wear. |

Your dad made most of his illusions, too! Like a mini zig zag for his beautiful little daughter....
(Feeling really inadequate now...) |

He actually made all his illusions, except for the
hindu basket (but he did make another replica with paper mache and stuff). anyway, Don't feel inadequate. There was a time, when he had to learn all that he knows on his own and there were no forums like this around. I only say learn to sew, because my dad never taught me, and I wouldn't have any problems physically sewing. I am just too darn intimidated by his sewing machine! Anyway, sewing is like building magic, only you can do it right and make it the way it will work for you. So if you get into any jams, at least you won't have to look for anyone to fix it while you are on road.

I'm sad to say .. I recently had my sewing machine in for a tune-up. Yes, I too have been know to sew a thing or two. My first project was a cape in Home-Economics class back in Junior High.
They all knew I was a bit different back then .. Steve |
