Has anyone performed this Dove from the air trick? I am thinking of getting it, but would like to know what audience reaction to this trick from those who have done it?

I have seen the trick but do not perform it (because I have seen it). It is not an ineffective trick but one of very limited application. I would only want to perform it in a theater setting due to ceiling height. It only produces doves. That is the easiest part so there are plenty of very good alternatives for that. (Good Dove vanishes are much harder to find.)
Unless you have a script that would allow you to make this a small part of a much larger routine, I would keep looking. It is more of an "extra toy" than the basis of show after show. It is purely mechanical so that it is not difficult. It works! I would simply rather have a more versatile prop for my money. It's not for me. It's your show! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks Bob, your opinion is well respected.

Bob is correct. It is a good effect but has some limitations. First, you really need an assistant. Second, you are swinging a net so a low ceiling height can kill you.
But audience reaction is good to it if you don't have problems with the limitations. Richard

Another observation is getting the speed right in swinging the net. You want to move it quick enough to create the illusion properly, but not so fast that you look like you might be slamming or hurting the dove in any way. Audiences tend to get quite upset with the appearance of any harm coming to the livestock.
All the best, Rob |

We have this unwritten "professional courtesy" that is free consultation to our fellow collegues in medicine as well as in magic. Maybe I should consult her on medical magic since she has been in it much longer than I have.

I use to perform it. It is not hard to perform. You will need perfect timing between you and your assistant.

I recently bought this illusion from Tillford Magic. The one I bought you can perform alone. You do not need an assistant. It's a beautiful effect and allows you to produce 2 doves, but the whole thing lasts about a minute. Check out http://www.tilfordillusions.com/noAssistant.html for details.

Amazinjess, I checked the website, nice prop but a bit more than I budget for.
You look so young, what other dove magics do you do? |

Jess,
It can be done as a single but it is more effective using an assistant. Jack Hughes made a model that fit into a table top. Did you ever get your Dove Encyclopedia question solved? Richard

Magicdoc,
In my current stage act I use balloon to dove, vanishing cane to silk to dove, the norm neilsen silk flower to dove, and then I use a dove to dog cage and produce my teacup yorkie. I have 12 doves and spend lots of time training them. I am preparing for the Tannen's competition this summer and am working on a new act using the dove catcher, goldfish productions, a few other dove steals and then then the vanishing dove cage. I have been working really hard on all this as well as schoolwork and doing shows. Posted: Feb 4, 2007 2:35pm Hi Richard, Yes, I did. Autumn found a copy for me. I did not receive the book yet, but it's on its way. Thanks for asking and thanks for all your help. Jess |
