Perhaps the MAK box would work--it looks like the "lip" has been altered on the video to facilitate turning which you cannot do with that model of Abbott's Die Box.
Allowing for the fact that Abbott's Die Box does not work quite like standard die boxes, the construction alteration does not appear too difficult... Have you been able to duplicate his routine with the MAK box? Julie |

The die (?) can be placed into the box while the front of the box faces the audience. The audience can see the die in the box, filling the compartment. The dirty work is done as the box is turned around and the doors are being closed. This renders the die now invisible when the doors are later opened. This particular move cannot be done if there is a lip surrounding the compartment. The MAK boxes, for a fairly inexpensive Die Box, CAN do this, and they have a very nice fitting s _ _ _ _. It is hard to see even at close range. The lip is therefore not required. I actually have two MAK boxes here. I bought each of them used (perfect condition) for about fifty bucks per. I did not get a set of instructions with either. I called the people at MAK a while ago and they cautiously indicated that Jack Leick's variation was the move in question, but they were kind of tight lipped about it. I have no solid proof. I have made my boxes both with and without the lip. Each has its benefits. The move in question is a nice subtlty, but is it necessary? For magicians who know the basic method, it can be a fooler. ~michael

Thanks Michael. An interesting note--Fantasma is including a novel die box in their current line-up. It's sort of a horizontal approach to the European Die Box and you can cleanly show the die in the box and there's no double doors and no turning move.
Now if "someone" would just make this in a nice wooden product... Julie |

OK, I am amazed, I had no idea there was so much to Die Boxes. I had one 20 or so years ago and it worked very well, and it was very old when I got it from a retired magician. I liked it and used it a lot, but I had no idea of the complexity and craftsmanship or the variations that go into them.
As I am rebuilding an inventory lost long ago I will be shopping for a new one soon, and I want it to be a show piece even when it is just sitting on the shelf. The Milson-Worth Deluxe Oriental is a true inspiration to behold-although I will probably go with something that will fit my show better rather than have a beautiful piece that I would have to rework my routine to fit. I'm glad I caught this thread because I think I would have purchased the wrong one for the wrong reason. Now I know I don't know anything about them really and will do some more research before I buy! Michael I'll be watching your site closely now!

Rick: I'm going to have to either measure it or send you the box. Meanwhile, I'm still scouring through my stuff to see if I can locate it. I can't imagine that it got tossed out, but so far, I haven't come up with it. I have 2 boxes. One is the Swoger box and I have no idea where I got the second one from.

Curt,
Did you purchase the Die Box? Was it all you expected? Charlie

Hi there,
I would like to make my own Die Box. Does anyone know in which book I can find a construction drawing? Peter |

Mel Babcock sells a book that gives complete step-by-step instructions and drawings for constructing his wonderful die box. The book is also a biography and history of Mel's other items produced over the years. I don't know the link, but a search for Magic House of Babcock should get you to his web page. Julie |

In many ways, buying one of Mel's boxes for $200.00 is a much easier, and likely much cheaper (if you don't already own all the required shop tools) way to get a die box than building your own........and that's presuming that you have the skill level to construct something like a die box.
Mel's stuff is a huge bargain considering the time, raw material, finishing and personal expertise that he puts into all his pieces. |

Thanks for the reply. It will be helpful.
I like to build a die box for the sake of it - I have a nicely equipped workshop and no projects to do Peter |

I hear you Peter!...... as Julie mentioned above, the Mel Babcock book is the one you want then.
It gives the best description of Mel's construction methods for a die box, and his boxes are considered among the best. If you already have a nice woodshop, then Mel's book could also inspire you with all the rest of Mel's product line past and present......it's all beautiful woodwork. |
