This is some footage of Henry Tom's winning performance for our club's Stage Magician Of the Year contest. Henry is a super nice guy and he works his real job as a dentist. This is not Henry's promotional video, but something I put together for fun. Any constructive criticism about my video production would be greatly appreciated.

This was an excellent video. As a fellow dentist and performing magician, you have a very classy act Henry! - Joel Zaritsky

The Video Production was great Rick. It was a pleasure to watch a video, without the fancy 2 minutes of special effects, before even seeing any magic. There were a few cuts, but it did not take away from the performance.
Henry, loved your act. Could not find anything negative to comment on. Loved your rope act and the ring act. Very professional. Phil |

Yes, the money we saved on stooges, we were able to afford some high end camera cuts.

Very polished looking act there. I wish I could have watched the real footage with music to it.
As I didn't see the real footage, I can't say anything about music and beats. But here's some things that could make your performance more stellar than it already is - at least in my opinion. I thought a nice little pause before something magical happens would be nice if it was inserted couple of times. I don't mean to say make it all choppy and put breaks everywhere but nicely defined segments would hit much harder than one continuous flowing movement - I can't say for sure because this was a montage of parts of your show but even within the individual segments I saw couple of places where breaks would have been really awesome - Maybe you were a little bit nervous? I find that I tend to keep myself always moving up on stage especially when I'm nervous. Also, although this may just be a personal style, there may have been a little too much extra movements (flinging of the ropes etc) It's my view that in stage routine, adding grace is taking out extraneous movements - not meaning to say don't move at all but keep them meaningful. More facial expressions can also help (in this situation since it was at a community hall) convey magical feeling to the spectators - again I can't really comment on this sine I did not watch the wonderful performance you put on. Oh, and I don't know whether this is just my pet peeve or not, but I think you might have been leaning on one leg while performing - at least part of it. If it wasn't intentional, I think it would make a subtle difference in how the persona is conveyed. I hope this helps you in some way.. most of them are just my personal opinion of small things in a good polished act. Congrats for winning the award! |
