There is a much worse video on the web of some idiot who slams the spectators hand down on the nail. He actually grabs here hand and shoves it onto the cup.
Gives me shivers. This could never happen with Scorpion. Unless you were drunk or something. Ok, say you were drunk and did slam your hand on Scorpion, due to the "bed of nails" effect, it wouldn't sever any tendons or muscles. James

With Scorpion you don't slam your hand down like some crazed psycho. It's a very zen presentation.
You stare the spec in the eyes as you slowly crush each cup flat. You are one with the Scorpion. You are the one. :bat: |

Yes it's interesting how the psychology of (as Tony said) 3-3-3-3 works, and how it can go wrong not just through NOT concentrating but in some cases actually concentrating too much.
What I really found interesting however was the reaction of the audience in the second clip. As the magician explained that "magic can sometimes go wrong" (a statement which I found totally hilarious considering what he had just been responsible for) the audience somehow decided to applaud. I believe this is where psychology meets sociology.WOW!!! Bobser

I never liked effects which supposedly put the performer or audience in imagined harm. While some may argue that this kind of effect puts more excitement into a performance I have to disagree. How far to you go with this sort of thing? Do you take a revolver that holds six bullets and put one in and spin the barrel and pull the trigger 5 times pointing it at the audience or yoursef? I realize that this sounds revolting to many and it should. But it sure puts a lot more excitement into the performance (if excitement is what you are trying to acheive with the spike effect) than just stabbing your hand...my point being that this is not entertainment as such. It is nothing more than fear being used as entertainment.
You have to ask yourself. What are you trying to accomplish with an effect of this nature? Is it the danger that the performer will ram a knife or spike, or into their hand and possibly maim themselves for life? There is an effect out by Outlaw Effects called Scorpion which accomplishes the same idea at a much more tame but just as entertaining using a very scary looking device with pointed spines on it that are supposedly dipped in poison. Why you may ask is this any different? Well first off I am sure that just about everyone in the audience with any amount of intelliggence knows that the spines are not really dipped in poison compounded by the fact that if one should fail...(highly unlikely with this effect) there will be some pain inflicted but no serious damage to oneself other than a very sore and picked hand and a bruised ego. Yet it accomplishes the same thing. Just my opinion and as I have said before we all know about opinions. They are like *******s every one has one.

Marc Salem had a bad experience with this at his London show, I actually think the fact that it has gone wrong increases the 'fear' factor..

Or do like I did and buy the Scorpion even after you have been doing the other style effect for near to two years.

There is a way to perform this routine without any danger in case you hit the wrong one. Just stick to all the cups a round hard plastic or metal disk(penny size) at the center bottom of them and paint them white.

Mark,
Yes that does protect the performer. I really had to read your post over a second time to understand what you meant..it is a good safe guard, in fact excellent. But it still creates fear in the spectator. While it does protect the magician it does not alter the fact that it looks as if the magician is putting himself in danger or perhaps the volunteer. Never the less a great idea.

Guys, are you talking about the first magician in the video? I'm pretty sure that it's Meni Lindenfeld from Israel. They even mention his name there.

Another idea would be to have a hole surgically cut into your hand and fill it with a flesh colored cork or something. Then you could do it that way all the time.

So maybe that means those magicians did that on purpose for future routines. Now it all makes sense.

Wow - a metal disc, great idea mark, wonderful.
last time I seen korn perform this, he closed by showing his scar from the dreaded incident, to show that it can go wrong. I guess that is interesting. |
