Steve's post about the $200 million really inspired me...
I've been accused of talking out of both sides of my mouth, maybe I can be the first to do so without moving my lips! BTW, I have his Whiteboard and several other puppets and Mr. Axtell's stuff is great! --J

Steve O. .. I also just purchasaed a Folkmannis Sheepdog and would really appreciate hearing more of how you intor him and what type of things you have him doing in your show?
I am finding that the small mouth is a bit hard to control sometimes as my fingers 'slip' out as he talks... Bought the Sheepdog DVD and it has a few ideas.. but not all that inspiring.. so could apprecate your insights. Thanks, - Nicodemus

As a puppeteer that is also a vent, I concur.
Most of my puppets talk...though my Axtell Chimp just does chimp noise, and an occassional imitation of a bird, dog etc... Zelda's realistic looks (and my nearly normal manipulations) are pleasing to our audiences and seem to attract photographers. (including free PR in newspapers over the years) Harris

I hjave seen Harris and his use of puppets and he is very good at what he does. He brings so much character and personality and fun into the puppet and really brings it to life. You can not help to be engaged and drawn inward to it. I think that is a huge key to the successful usage of puppets in any show.

I will be "cheating" when I add a puppet to my program. Some of us are patiently waiting for our Axtell hands-free puppets to arrive. I know that I can sell the use of this puppet but I just have had a mental roadblock in using a regular puppet. I think that to do this well it takes a special person to be able to do this. I know my limitations but at the same time I also really want the puppet experience to be part of my show. My hats go off to the folks who can create original puppet routines and use their talents to bring these things to life.
I have chosen the magic chimp and would probably consider adding the book puppet when it comes out. The chimp puppet makes perfect sense for me personally as well it's a puppet that I can use in both my reading and science shows. I'm going to have a little white lab coat sewn for him and maybe put on some black rimmed glasses held together with tape. I'm excited to finally be able to add another character to my act and look forward to working with it. |

Thanks for your kind words Kyle. Don't you love it when the audience becomes engaged before you or your puppet says a word, squeek, or eeeek?
Puppets were "the ultimate mask" for this shy kid growing up. First came the behind the scenes..which led to puppet versions of plays from Peter and the Wolf to Oklahoma...The last one we had singers from a local college record the music for us...Oh what fun it is to be behind the scenes and to have reached the point where I could come out behind the curtain. I am having a lot of fun preparing for the 09 Library Season... Boxes , and Slinkies and Furs ....OH MY! Accesorizzzzzzzzing puppets bring them to life...cue the alarm clock.. harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrisssssssssssss

Hello,
I am new to the Magic Café. I use Rocky Raccoon in my kid shows as well as a spring skunk. The skunk seems to work better in my square circle because of the black fur. I also have a zig zag rocky illusion that kids love. I just learned about AXTELL puppets and I bought the Magic Drawing Board which is a BIG HIT. AXTELL has some great puppets. Does anyone sell gently used AXTELL puppets in this forum? If I had the money I would buy all of them new, but if there is a way to save a few dollars on some that I would not use as much that would be great. |

I have 15 puppets and I use only 3 puppets in my show.
No magic, yeah, I'm a ventriloquist. 3 puppets enough to last me 30 minutes. Last time, I help one fellow magician who wants to add a puppet but he is a bad ventriloquist. So I introduce him to Spring Raccoon. If practiced well, it can look real. Plus, if you add Zig-Zag Raccoon it will make it even better. |

I start my show with Roxie the Raccoon demonstrating her four tricks. She can play dead, roll over (with the help of an audience member) and do a jumping trick from myself to a member of the audience.
Her last and best trick is hide-n-seek where a silk disappears as I hide it in my fist while she's not looking (TT) and she sniffs around until she finds it on a child in the audience. Usually it is in a loose shirt tail or a loose sleeve. |

For kids shows, I ALWAYS use puppets and vent. I have a knee figure named Rudy Redwood, an Axtell Dodo, Axtell's Old Storyteller, and Rocky Racoon. I also have the drawing board.
For my adult shows, I do the mask--gets better reactions with the same bit and voice as Rudy--and some getting old jokes with the storyteller.

I love adidng puppets to my shows. I am no ventriloquist by any means but I realize that I do not have to be. I create life and persoanlity into the puppets I use. I fijnd it works great for my day care age kids shows and I even use them in strolling situations. The people love it and they forget I am even there.

I got to agree Kyle. Puppets are great fun.

For the last couple of months I have been having fun with duct tape and other objects around the house..creating puppets...
It is good to see puppets being used in commercials...from the "hunger" puppet to the guy creating puppets out of paper cup lids, teapots and .....he also drags his TV from room to room... Harris "have puppets will travel"

I have several puppets that I incorporate in my act. Usually just one but sometimes I use two. As mentioned in previous posts above...the kids love them and seem to relate to them when presenting a certain theme or message.

I use puppets in most of my Shows! No matter what you do with them the most important thing is this. If you react and treat them real, so will the kids! They are one of the things that get the best reactions in my shows! Highly recommended! Cheers!

My Axtel Magic board routine is a huge hit. I have never been a fan of Axtel routines (except for the platypus!) but their puppets are fantastic. I have bought and worn out 3 Axtel magic boards and I am now on my fourth.
When marketing a magic show, saying it includes puppets is a big plus compared to the guy that just does magic. That being said, puppetry is very hard for me. I occasionally develop a really good routine with a puppet, but most are never used because it has to be a smash hit or I will not use it. |
