After a few shows you should be well on the way to finding out what works and what doesn't. Put someone in the audience to guage adience reaction and ask her to take notes while the show is on. Let your friend know exactly what info you want .... what get good reaction, what gets no reaction, what drags, how long is each routine, etc. It's also a good idea to record it and be as critical of yourself as you need to be.

Jakeg,
Thanks, I actually plan to video the whole thing. Hopefully I can talk my better half into springing for a nice camera to do it with. Then I can edit it and post for others to critique as well. Jim |

Since the dropper is making things bigger try being creative with that. Take a rainbow streamer, put it into a switchbag, put in a couple drops, pull out a three foot rainbow streamer (I do this). Do it after a routine where you make the streamer vanish and reappear etc so the thing is in your hands for a reason. Make sure to fail with the vanish a few times, drop it, etc..

If you are looking for some other effects with wands, Tarbell has some minimally gimmicked wand tricks v2 p50-51, v3 p27, v5 p108. Then there are the Flip stick moves that can be visually fun.

Hey, Jim -
I know you were going to put some time into re-thinking the whole "rules or no-rules" issue, but I want to throw my hat into the "establish rules" side of the house. I have always given the kids my expectations and never felt that I've alienated my audience. It's all in how you approach it. "How many of you have been to a real live magic show before ... with a real live magician? Hey, that's great, a number of you. Now how many of you have NEVER been to a live magic show before? Hmm, quite a few of you, I see. Well for those of you who have never been to a magic show before, let me tell you what you can expect ..." And then launch into what they can expect AND what you expect. I think that most kids out there don't have a clue as to what's acceptable behavior at a magic show and it's up to us to lay down the ground rules. Regards, Larry

UPDATE: As the day approaches, I'm getting jittery and excited at the same time.
I went on a search for the right eye dropper and turkey baster. What I ended up with was an eye dropper, a matching turkey baster (both have blue bulbs and look like bigger / smaller versions of each other) along with three other turkey basters of the same type with different color bulbs. Now, if I choose (still debating this one) I can do a color changing turkey baster bulb bit too. Best, Jim |

If you change the color act like you don't notice and hand it to the kid and say, if it is a white bulb, "here, hold the red dropper", kids find it funny when you mis-state things. Don't be nervous, they are just kids!
