Matt, you could be reading my mind! Some of the gigs I've been unhappiest with are the ones in the most expensive houses (and I live in the Silicon Valley area, so there are some people with a LOT of money here.) I also did some work with a very high-end country club and they were much more trouble than the lower-end ones...for no more money.
And some of the kids of the wealthy are the worst-behaved I've ever met. Arrogant, spoiled, bored, impatient and just unappreciative. However, there have been many others that aren't, but the percentage of "bad" ones seems higher! So my experience in the States is similar to yours. I've also found that your prices can only go so high before the majority of callers say, "I've got to discuss this with my husband" and then never call back. So while I respect the position in the market that Billy and the others have created for themselves, I don't have that position here, so market forces apply and limit what I can charge for a show. I've just decided that there will always be performers cheaper than me...and more expensive. |
