What is a good method to clean coins. I want them to shine like new or at least have a shine that they would all seem similar, or rather hard to distiguish one from another.
I have been practicing with half dollars, the oils and dirt are starting to make them look old. I want my props to look good. Any good methods? |

For regular run of the mill halfs, the only way i know of cleaning them is a Dremel with cotton tip and High Polish Buff compound.
I wouldn't do this to any valuable coin thought. For silver stuff try tarnex and copper try brasso. |

Ahhh, I have just read all of those posts you referred to Pyro, and now I have no idea what to do if I ever have to clean my coins. Everyone has conflicting opinions.
Does the "salt/lemonjuice and vinegar solution" work with all coins or just copper coins? And also, can any of these solutions be used on shells/coin sets as well without being too abrasive? |

The salt/lemon juice solution I posted only works for copper coins. I am still trying to find a way to polish clad half-dollers...

I personally like all those toxic chemicals, but if you don't feel like paying the money for all of those chemicals try this:
All Silver: Put aluminum foil in a plastic or glass bowl and sprinkly the foil with salt and baking soda. Soak silver... The tarnish migrates to the aluminum. All Copper: Ketchup, soak for 5 to 10 seconds and wash. I have not found a good way to clean modern halfs or quarters other then to polish them. Anyone have a suggestion? Needless to say, this removes tarnish only! It does nothing for dirt and grime which must be removed by soap, water, sponge, and a toothpick. |

This may sound funny, but, try toothpaste with an old (not your personal) toothbrush. Avoid dipping silver in jewelry cleaner. This will result in making your silver look like chrome. This method also removes a layer of silver from the coin. Repeated use will truly make your coin disappear !!
Good Luck - Lee.
In December of '06 I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. One in a million people worldwide are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Sarcomas account for 1% of all cancers. Knowledge is power!
