Hi gang,
I am posting this as a new location on Magic Café' where I can periodically post interesting items regarding Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith, the infamous nineteenth century bunco man and crime king-pin. I would like to invite those interested in the history of Soapy Smith to join Friends of Soapy Smith. At this time all it really encompasses is receiving periodic emails relating to Soapy. It works well for those who don't go to the site's "What's New" page very often. Go to the website to join http://www.soapysmith.net Click here to view attached image. |

If you're ever drinking at The Red Onion in Skagway, it's always best to get the lay of the land before you raise your glass to Soapy.
Depending on who's in the saloon on any given night, some raise their glass to Soapy, and some raise their glass to Frank Reid, the man who shot him dead. Reid was a civil engineer who was the only guy in town with the stones to stand up to Soapy. (Soapy got a shot in at Frank and killed him at the same time) In winter, when the sun isn't seen for months at a time, The Red Onion can be a very scary place to be with only the locals tipping their glasses, none of whom have seen the sun for a very long time. Just when things get heated up, somebody usually comes in the front door to tell everybody in the bar that the northern lights are doing some very strange things tonight, whereupon everybody goes outside to wittness what most of North America will never see, and can't even begin to imagine. Alaska and Yukon are truly the LAST frontier, and having played Hold'Em in Dawson City in the early eighties with some very serious, and some very old fashioned gamblers, most of the regulars in this forum would probably have the holiday of their lives in places like Skagway, Eagle, Dawson City, Faro, and Keno. The north holds special meaning to me......can you tell? You can't go wrong at Jeff Smiths web site, and it's an introduction to the REAL wild west, and it's all still there to see with your own eyes. |

I have read about soapy smith. And it brings to mind that the professions most of us have were around in the 19th century. Truck drivers today were stage coach drivers then. These snitching police were deputies and us 3cm/3sg/card and dice mechanics we were the slicks like soapy. So I want you guys to reflect upon who were you in the 19th century?

I reckon I would be the guy who ran a faro game. But rather be The Sundance Kid.

Trains, Banks and so on, I guess. I only know from films, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, and so on. I like the opening scene when he is playing poker and the guy calls him a cheat.

He was good at turning blame around. You can read both the vigilante Committee of 101 and Soapy's Law & Order Comm of 317 here http://www.soapysmith.net/page4.html Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Hi Gang-
You may recall back on January 9, 2007 Terry "Ike" Clanton had me on his live web-cast program, The Haunted Saloon, to talk about Soapy. It was the very first show and he promised he would have me back on as a guest as the show grew. Well, it's grown and Terry wants me back (good for the 'ole ego). This time he asked me to perform the entire Prize Package Soap Sell Swindle on camera. Viewers are invited to call in with questions or comments. The show is live on April 10, 2007 and begins at 7:00 pm. pacific time and can be found at http://www.clantongang.com |
