I'm going to be using a Vernet TT junior ( Or regular ). What should the size of the silk be? I'm looking for the largest size possible.
Should I get 6" x 6" silk?

You can easily vanish a 9" square silk in the Vernet TT (the one I use).
However, you know that you can also vanish a 12" Diamond Cut silk in one also. The advantage is that a 12" diamond cut looks like an 18" square silk but takes the space of a 9" square silk. (Remember that silks are measured by the straight hemmed edges and NEVER by the diagonal measurement. Unfortunately there are dealers who don't understand that and either overcharge for the silk you get or don't ship what you need. Make them measure the straight sides. There are four sizes imported. They are 9", 12", 18" and 24". The 24" looks like a 36" square and cost as much. The 18" looks like a 24" square. The 12" and the 18" are the most popular sizes. The 9" diamond cut is small enough that tied together two will easily fit into a Silk to Egg or can be used as just one 12" silk in a dye tube. For playing off team or school colors, it can be very useful. While DoveLite does import and stock 6" silks, about the best use for them is with a dye tube. You can put three in (6" Red, Yellow and Blue) and produce a 9" rainbow silk with all the colors (and with room to spare). Scheme! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hi there,
A 9 inch square silk is probably your best bet as it looks the best! that's just my opinion! Many thanks Magical Mark Watson (mark1991)

You can use the 9" silk. It will fit, because I also use a small TT.
However, I prefer to take a 12 or 14" silk, paint a perfectly straight, diagonal stripe of Fray Check on the silk, let it dry, then split it diagonally. It looks huge when you produce it! However, Bob's suggestion of the diamond silk will likely do the same thing. Bob knows silks!

There are TTs that hold a 12" square silk. Don't forget that a 4"x36" silk streamer takes the same space as a 12" square silk. However, the streamer looks huge compared to the square. You may also need the space for a message on the silk.
Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

So many great choices and advice from the experienced pros above.
I'll just add that my pre-teen daughter, who uses a junior size TT, has found she prefers a 9" diamond cut. It fits in her TT perfectly, and the diamond cut allows her to get away with the effect of a having a larger hankerchief without the bulk.

I prefer the 12" diamond silks. The 9" silk just seems too small looking to me. I like the diamond silks also because they can loop over the laces on my pouch and not fall off. A 9" silk would just fall off.
I think I read that Pete Biro hates the diamond silks but I cannot remember why. Get one of each and see what you think.

Frank,
As the magicians' silk importer, I have to agree that diamond cut silks are the "in" thing. The most popular size is the 12". (40% of total diamond cut sales and there are three other sizes!) It's a great look-a-like for an 18" square. AND it will fit into a TT. (Actually, I think when produced from a TT it simply looks better too because the corner always hangs straight and is easy to find.) Like Pete, I still prefer squares. Good China silks now can have excellent small (2mm) flat hems that are fantastic compared to what we imported for decades. My real problem is that good hems on diamond cut silks won't work because of the way the cloth has to be cut to hang right. Therefore, diamond cut silks have the inferior serger hem (like a bath cloth) that adds bulk but no strength, isn't very straight, has ugly corners and is visually unappealing. Pete and I are just not in the swing of things on this one. I know better than to kill the goose providing the golden eggs and diamond cut silks are very hot. There will be plenty imported here. I'm just stuck in a time warp personally. I doubt they will go away unless magic becomes animation instead of live performances. When that happens, Pete and I have lived too long. Magic is for personal appearances even with diamond cut silks! The basic difference is that a square silk is just a supply and a diamond cut silk is a gimmick. Gimmicks are certainly allowable in magic. You win! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

"What is Fray check? "
It is used in sewing to keep cut material from unraveling. It is a glue that stays pliable. I use it a lot on my rope. You can get it anywhere sewing supplies are sold. ChrisG

Fray Check is amazing: http://www.denverfabrics.com/search/sear......p;page=1
(Don't scold me, Bob. I will use the diamond silk as soon as I get it.) You should also add Stitch Witchery to your collection: http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/m......_Count=1 You can hem your too-long pants with it, WITHOUT sewing! You just use a wet cloth and a hot iron. It is magic! Oops...I digress from the topic. Mea culpa. Mea bad. Back to the best size of silk for a TT.
