Many years ago at an R/C modelers' fly-in in North Carolina I saw met a guy who had built a scale Boeing 747. Best I can remember, it had about a twelve-foot wingspan. It was equipped with full retracts, all running lights, and everything else you can imagine, and he flew it from a pilot's chair that swiveled so he could track it as it flew.
Man, wouldn't you hate to lose the radio on something like that? If you really lke stuff like this, look here: http://www.alexisparkinn.com/radio_control_videos.htm (that chopper guy is INSANE!) BTW, I'm dropping you one of the C-17s in the mail this afternoon. Be on the lookout so you can sign for it! ;)

It will take me awhile to load these, but I think I'll enjoy those a lot, Amos. Thanks!
I built many balsa planes as a kid, but never had the funds to go R/C. There was a field close to my home where guys would fly some pretty large planes (5'-6' wingspans). At age 9 or 10, I would hang out and collect broken propellers. One guy had a Sopwith Camel and another a Folker Tri-plane. Yes, the SC had Snoopy at the stick! He and The Red Baron would dogfight over the field, and one or the other would begin to spew smoke and the "pilot" would eject, and descend by parachute! It was the coolest!! ~michael

I got all the way to R/C helicopters, but I sold everything shortly thereafter. I could loop it, and the instructions said that you could roll it, but I never worked up the nerve to try it. I had too much invested to try to "lawnmower move".

Very interesting. I'm from the days where you would finger start the engine and then try to get to the strings before it took off. Are those jumbo planes allowed in the US?

Thank you, the references I saw before were all UK and Germany. Amazing what they have now. Where I recently moved from they had an RC airport but I never saw them that big. Thank you for the links, very interesting.

This reminded me of the jump from the "little" estes rockets and kits to the high scale rockets that use clusters of J rockets to get into the air for over 1000 ft. Will try to find a link for this sport.
As for the r/c planes, real jet engines can be bought for them, but boy do they take a chunk out of your wallet. Too rich for my blood.

It's very impressive but I especially like the scale modles that are like fighter jets and actually fly with duct jet fans.....they are extremely fast. I think you are required to have a special certification to operate and purchase fuel for them. I've only seen them at airshows.

I'm sure anyone flying something large or fast will eventually run into regulations. I wouldn't regard that as a problem. Look at the helicopter video to understand why.
