We went thru the fabric store and found fabric that we liked and then held it up to the lights..if we could see through it we moved to another one..if not we looked at the price tag. We got a red "vinyl" looking fabric that has a snake skin pattern on it. We thought it might be a bit heavy for my son (the real illusionist in the family) but we took the chance. It works out pretty good for us. If you'll search out the string here at the Café titled "as promised" there is a link to the video if you're interested in seeing the curtain. The Video is also posted on our magic club's website, which is listed in my profile.
I'm a very proud dad so I try not to be overbearing with it. I know that didn't help a lot but I just thought I'd tell you how WE went shopping. |

Matt,
There is a lot of trial and error here. I do recommend that you remember that it will be dropped on a dirty stage and should never need ironing. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I made one for my sub trunk. I went to a fabric store and found a blue one that would really work with what I do but it was sort of see through so I found a darker blue and sewed it to the back and it turned out perfect. I also sewed on some small stars at the top to make it look even better.
Just look for the fabric that works for you and go from there. Good luck! |

Fabric Choice is just that, a choice for you to make. It sounds like you are going about this in the right way get a few swatches you think will work and try them under the lights. You might also try Rose BrandNew york. They will send you larger swatches and have a great selection at reasonable prices with quick shipping. good luck

Hey guys thanks for all the advice. I was hopin for a lil more leads towards handlings. Shoulda been more specific. We've seen different people out there Majinx, Chris Angel, Pendragons, and countless others. Any advice on different types of handlings?

Just my opinion...but Angel's is much better in a "video"or limited angle medium....Majesticx learned from the Pendragons...the Pendragons really took this to a new level.....I would focus on getting rid of the box and not devote so much on the cloth handling.....just food for thoutht.

This is a VERY OLD trick and pre-dates television. Lucy and I will be 67 and 62 in April and still perform it. The good news is that we are the youngsters compared to our friends in their 80s who performed it professionally for half a century.
It is very effective. Frankly, I haven't seen a noteworthy innovation in the presentation in the last thirty years. But every generation of new enthusiasts discover that it is a very versatile prop. The curtain is one way to personalize it. It certainly can be made angle-proof and when it was performed in shopping malls in the 60s it was often performed surrounded. Therefore, many professionals have two sets of curtains. The traditional is the wrap-around and the blind version (front view only) uses the two-piece rip-apart or a single piece on a curtain rod with curved ends. The single piece makes for a better visual straight line across the top as the first person lifts the curtain for the transposition. The two-piece rolls up and stores more easily. My suggestion is to buy enough cloth to make both curtains (wrap-around and front-only) because show conditions change and space in shipment can become VIP. Also weight matters! Keep it light. Make it your show. Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I have been doing sub-trunk for six years now and I always use the wrap-around full four sides curtain. Unless you know for sure that you will never have to worry about angles I feel it is best to go with this one first. Make up a second smaller (one or two section) one if you like...but definately have a full one available. I perform this effect a lot at outdoor events so the wrap around is best for us. To make it we actually used medium weight curtain/upholstry material. It is very heavy, but when performing outdoors it helps a lot if wind starts to kick up. We also hemmed a length of chain into the bottom as they do with stage curtains and this helps as well. For a curtain rod I use four pieces of pvc pipe that slide into sleeves in the top of the curtain and connect with elbow joints. The sleeves are open at the joint areas. The frame breaks down easily this way. The curtain is bulky and heavy...but I can use it in any venue indoors or out.
For making lighter curtains, if you find material you like and that has a good look to it and is not thick enough, a good seamstress can always sew a piece of opaque fabric to the back ( a lining). That is what we have done many times. It is a pain sometimes, so make sure the person doing the sewing knows what they are doing. |

I have the same design as aquamage. I used pvc pipe with elbow joints painted black for the rod/frame and the chain in the bottom seam of the curtain. My wife sewed this on our home sewing machine. We used black satin/polyester fabric from the fabric store - light weight, can't see through it, does not wrinkle easily, and looks good. I glued the elbows onto two of the pieces of pvc and the other two pvc pipes twist into place so the rod comes apart into four lengths. I roll the curtain up instead of folding it so there are no creases. I use a blue polyester fabric bottomless bag that we also made with chain in the bottom seam and a white rope drawstring to get tied into. This inner bag stays in the trunk. I also use a pair of Cannon's quick release handcuffs.
Best Wishes, Dave

Hi,
I was wondering about the curtian handlings. Are these all public domain? I don't perform illusions but is it generally acceptable to use another illusionist's (e.g. The Pendragons) cloth handling? Respectfully, Chris |

What's wrong with seeing thru it? Seriously

There will be no reason to do it if anyone can see thru it.

Hmmm...with the right lighting and a shilouette sewn into the fabric I think it would be possible.

I never thought about using a silhouette for metamorphoses. There must be some way it can work. You could be sitting on a goldmine.

That's what I meant by 'seriously' = being creative and finding a new approach. I've got many more ideas then that, one beeing a levitation (suspension) of a person 360 surroundable. Kind of like the Criss Angel on Fremont street but less expensive and performable infront a 'real' audience...
