Wow! That looks great! What kind of material is the roof/shingles, doors, and shutters made from? Maybe it's the green color of these items, but they kind of look like plastic? Also, what type of material is the "stone" around the bottom? Where did you get all these materials? Whatever it is, it looks fantastic, as does the completed dollhouse!

Thanks for the compliments gentlemen! Zazz has worked really hard on this project and we love it!
Regan, the shutters, doors, etc. are made from the same wood as the hardwood floor, which Dan grooved himself. He either picked the 1/4" wood up at a craft store or Home Depot, not sure which. The shingles are cedar and individual, which means he had to hand glue each one on-- that took awhile! The shingles he bought at an actual dollhouse shop in a neighboring town. The same for the moldable clay which hardens when exposed to air and is paintable. Lou, did you change any of the dimensions from the plans? I am my daughter's assistant/box jumper. I am a little shorter than your assistant and weigh a few more pounds (not much) and have no problem fitting into the dollhouse. Although, I can't sit the way the DVD suggests. If you want to email me I can explain how I sit, which may help your assistant. Thanks again for the compliments! I know Dan will appreciate them after all his hardwork. |

Thanks for the positive comments.
The stone work is made from Paperclay from Michaels. http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displ......m=gc0597 This product really looks good and is easy to sculpt but there was a learning curve in using it. This product shrinks and warps, so I had to build each side of the house in four small sections, let it dry, trim, glue into place, fill in between the smaller pieces and trim again before painting. The hardwood flooring and the front door are made from solid maple bought at Lowe's. I made a jig and ripped the pieces then planed each one to get the "V" groove. The windows and shutters are made from stock wood bought from Michaels craft store. I "V" grooved the shutters and glued them and the window frame pieces onto 1/8" craft plywood, painted and finally attached to the house. All of the surfaces are coated with at least three coats of paint follow by three coats of a satin clear coat. Dan |

Dan... you did a superb job of building my "baby." Thanks for posting the pictures. I sure wish I could have been at the debut showing, but had to travel to the South Bay for shows myself.
I look forward to seeing your Doll House in person. For those of you that want to fool yourself, take another look at Dan's pictures above. The green roof pieces fold down against the side of the house. (You can see the hinges in the picture if you look carefully.) And that means they are just slightly smaller. But when you look at the picture isn't it "clear" that the roof is larger than the side? It's just an example of how breaking up a surface into various sections and colors reduces it's apparent size dramatically. Dennis Loomis

Dennis,
I hope your show in the South Bay went well! Danielle did a beautiful job both on Thursday night for the private VIP preview, and then again on Saturday for the grand opening to the public. Since you couldn't be there we thought you would enjoy seeing the video unedited (you'll be receiving it via email also) and we would share the workings with the Café as well. Her stage show routine is all choreographed to music and the entire show revolves around the theme Alice in Wonderland-- which fit in beautifully with the 'fantasy' park, Children's Wonderland. We planned on having "Alice" emerge from the dollhouse, however we felt it would be inappropriate for me to emerge as Alice since "Alice" was in the park greeting children that day. Here is a clip for everyone, just click on the link which will take you to the video: http://s130.photobucket.com/albums/p270/......ile2.flv Again Dennis, thank you so much for all your help with this project. I know Dan so enjoyed talking to you about it! Warmest regards, Kristen P.S. Danielle felt like quite the "star" that day. She had people asking for her autograph and also to take pictures with her. However, she took it all in stride and didn't let it get to her head. Although, her smile was stretched ear-to-ear throughout the day! |

Kristen,
Yes, most of the time it would be marvelous to appear in an Alice in Wonderland Costume. Or, Danielle could be Alice and you could pop out as the Queen of Hearts! There are so many wonderful characters from Alice in Wonderland... just brainstorm on it. Danielle was the "star." She's a poised and talented young lady and I predict that good things are in her future. One of the best things about the clip is the reaction of the audience. They were clearly "floored" when you appeared. This is a tribute to the overall presentation, your skill at popping out of the House (Not an easy thing to do well), Danielle's graceful performance, and a little bit to my design. I'm so thrilled that my decision to reissue the Workshop Plans as a DVD has led to the efforts of talented people like you folks and Lou. Thanks to folks like you, my little "baby" is enjoying a rebirth of interest. Dennis Loomis

Question, has anyone built one of these with a complete forced perspective interiors? Ie, Side walls slanted in as well? Wondering if it ads anything of worth to the illusion.
Leaping Lizards!!! Who knew it was possible.

Dennis,
I'm going to send you a personal email. Danielle received an evalutation form back from her performance using the dollhouse that I thought you would enjoy reading. Also, an audience member wrote a Letter to the Editor and specifically mentioned Danielle's show, praising it, and spoke of the dollhouse. ~ Kristen |
