Sammy will, I am sure, do a great job. It will be interesting to see how many of his kid's products will appear in the pages, and whether there will be more of a focus on chidren's entertainers. Which kids entertainer will be the first to be on the front cover?

Maybe he will be the first to appear as the new editor.

Rodney is probably rightabout SPS being featured first -- although ONLY if they do it beofre he takes the helm. Sammy never seemed like the type to put himself on the cover. Has Silly Billy worn off as "Flavor of the Day" yet among children's magicians? Maybe it'll be him ...

Correct, your are SPS has never wanted to be in the limelight he is very low key. That is why I am surprised he took this job. He will be in the limelight a lot now.

I hopeful that TLR will receive an update or something that just gives it more life. Not sure why but it just isn't my favourite magic magazine. I'm hopeful theh SPS will make it something that I find more enjoyable.

I agree ... a facelift is needed. MUM now looks great under its new editor. Do you suppose Tony Dunn will stay on as art director?
And what do you guys think of the tiny size? I know it's tradition, but is the digest size the right format for TLR? Perhaps full-size would provide more room for better layouts, clearer photos and illustrations, and more entincing ads. |

Sammy's a good friend of mine and in addition to being a well respected children's entertainer, many people may not be aware that he is also a fantastic writer and businessman as well. I'm sure that he has some great plans for TLR.
Congrats Sammy! Lyndel |

I know many magicians gave up on TLR years ago because it never kept up with the times. The only difference between a present day copy of the TLR and one from 1932 is the color cover.
It would be great if TLR could look as great as Magic Magazine, which is the benchmark in my opinion. Gerry |

Content is much more important than cosmetics, but I do agree the format could stand a major update. Page-for-page TLR is still tops (not Topps ) in my book!

TLR needs more than a cosmetic make over;it needs a major overhaul. MUM was sort of in the same rut but they seemed to turn things around quite nicely with editor John Morhing. I wish Samuel Patrick Smith all the luck because he's going to need it with this project. Gerry |

I agree that MUM looks better now, but I do not like it as good. I miss some of the old columnists. I sure hope Sammy will bring more kid show stuff to TLR. I used to love the David, Steve, and Sammy's Komedy Kids Kolumn. It was disappointing when they discontinued it. However, Steve Taylor's Family Fun Forum filled the void nicely. Since Steve's column stopped MUM has never been the same for me.

Having written for MUM for a number of years I am biased, but I always felt that MUM had a more personal feel to it. I think its current version has somewhat retained that with its increased focus on the assemblies. One thing that I really liked was when Goodsell started running the "Grassroots Magicians" section. It was refreshing to see guys that I could relate to rather than the same old "Vegas and Castle" crowd. How many times do I have to see Mac King or Eugene Burger?
It's unfair to compare TLR and MUM to MAGIC, as they are organs for professional organizations and are expected dedicate space to membership as opposed to whatever is happening in magic that strikes their fancy. It also costs a lot more -- TLR and MUM come with membership, and STILL cost less! Nobody's mentioned that Sammy has a degree in journalism, so he'll be more than suited for the job. |

Sammy is a very creative thinker. TLR couldn't have a better person at the helm.
