My opener is not so much a "trick" as a demonstration of how I am going to achieve everything they are about to see that evening.

I'm going to fill a 10-minute slot in a festival next week.
I didn't even consider an opener - it's just one effect in three phases, and even then I'm going to need every second of my time slot.

May I personally recommend that if you only have 10 minutes and want to really impact them for the rest of their life, you should look into "Something" from a certain well known & wise Café regular who was too humble to mention his routines in his post above.
The routine regarding psychological forcing is astounding in its implications and has very quickly become a dear friend to me. If I only had 10 minutes to create believers, there is no stronger way I have ever seen to do it. The reason they WILL believe is they will EXPERIENCE reading minds directly for themselves and have NO idea how they did it. They are left with no choice other than to BELIEVE. Most importantly though, do something that ignites YOU and your enthusiasm will be infectious! Cheers, Al

A single good opening effect? I would go with the Osterlind version of Bank Night. It leaves the audience with a good feeling and sets up the premise that being a volunteer is a safe and fun thing. That is important not just to you, but those that follow.

I've used Osterlinds Bank Night effect as an opener before. I have considered it. As I only have a 10 min spot I think that routine would be too long and not leave much time for anything else. But then I want quality not quantity.

So there you have it? A strong opener, leading directly to a strong finish (like, maybe, Trilogy?) and you take your applause.

I guess I would have to ask: What is the theme of the show? or perhaps What is the theme of the nights event?
If you have none and just wish to mix up mental magic with no plausible rational then I recommend those above as well as: Magic Square, Multi Person Think a Card, Audience as Mentalist reading your mind psychology mixed with nail writing effects, as well as a good quick utensil bend to establish yourself as a true hodge podge of mental mix ups. Could set up the theme for the night?
I love magic!

Magic Square or Goal Mine are my favourite openers.

Hi Derek,
I totally agree with the guys who chose simply 1x10 minute effect, and perhaps bank night would fit perfectly. I also agree that Osterlinds version might run over, however it doesn't have to be 5 envelopes. If you consider for example all 'stab' methods they normally use 4 0r 5 pins whereas Jermay's dangerous opener uses only 2. Regards, Bobser.

Even better is that either can easily and naturally be part of your introductory comments which set the tone for what is to follow. This lets the participants know what kind of person you are. In fact, that's exactly what I do with them myself (in two different acts, of course). Ostensibly I'm explaining that the success of mentalism depends upon YOU (the participants) while all of a sudden hitting them with something. Here's the line I use from one of my scripts (which comes immediately after a humorous---deliberately not uproarious---line: "Seriously though, a show of the type I present is only made possible with your help. You see, I depend upon willing participants and without you, I have no show at all." The running time for the full opening comments, including a Swami opener of my own devising is 1:30. It's quick, surprising and sets the tone for what is to follow. For what it's worth, the full script at less than two minutes took me more than three years to write! Thomas Henry P.S. Oops, I see now that Ken Dyne said something very similar: Quote:
