I just can't see learning and practicing sleights I don't want to use. Maybe it's because I'm middle-aged; maybe it's because I'm an "agile" programmer. I barely have enough time to learn the sleights I do need.
For me, sleights are a means to perform a trick (which is why I don't mind self-working tricks at all). They're not an end in themselves. But that's just me; someone who practices sleights for the fun of it is doing exactly the right thing, IMO. ///ark |

There are so much in magic that we can learn from but bear in mind that not everything is suitable for everyone. Identify those that are suitable for you then focus on mastering them. Of course it is also important to learn up the basics first.

I tend to agree that you don't need to master tricks you don't like, but the queston is whether or not your audience will dislike the tricks you dislike.
When I first read 'Chicago Opener', I thought it is a mediocre trick not worth to perform. After hearing from my friends that the trick is a wonderful one, I tested it and knew the friends are right. The Magic viewed from your side is different from the Magic viewed from audience's side. If you don't understand this, you will miss some of wonderful tricks forever. Having said that, as this is a forum for beginners, you may practice only tricks you like for the time being. When you come back to RRTCM later, you will like the tricks you had disliked.
