I am interested in adding this to my act, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good supplier for these effects? I would prefer a dealer in the UK, but any dealer would be great.
Thanks, Diane |

Go to http://www.bearclawmfg.com - They have a pretty good selection and a good reputation (not to mention a top notch fire safety section). There is http://www.firewhip.com - I've seen their fans and liked them pretty well.
http://www.firetoys.com is UK based, but I don't know much about them. Personally, I design my own tools, then take them to a metal fabricator. That way there are all exactly to my specs (and frequently cheaper than buying them from a dealer). After they are made, you just need to learn how to wick them. We just made up a set of 20" long, 5-stave spiderweb fans, cut from a single piece of metal - no welds, no seams. Very low cost, and these things are gorgeous. Something to think about. Gwyd |

Hey, guys, can you explain to me what these are and what they do? I've never heard of 'em...
Thanks, -Vinnie |

Fire fans and wings are tools for fire dancing.
A steel fan (usually non-folding) with a wick at the tip of each of the tines is a fire fan. Beautiful to watch a talented dancer with them. Wings are similar, but much larger and shaped much like a bat wing (with a wick at the end of each "finger"). They can be flourished, spun, tossed, and just moved sensually. There is one picture of Sylver with her small fans on our Knotty Bits MySpace page, and a fire fan is used in our logo. http://www.myspace.com/knottybits There are another one or two on her page (in the slideshow under her "About Me" section and in the photos section if you have a MySpace account) http://www.myspace.com/sylverfyre You will also see pics of her eating, painting, fire poi, and dancing with fire cups. (A really neat set of fire tools. When you hold them still, the flames die down from lack of oxygen. When you move them again, the pop small fireballs from the cup.) All of the tools, except her torches, were designed by me. The problem with fans and such is they are pretty feminine tools. That is why I have fire claws (see my avatar) instead. Have a set of fire hatchets and flaming batleth (those weird curved weapons that Klingons use) under construction right now. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out new things to light on fire. Probably my strangest so far is the fire umbrella. But...back on topic... Fire fans are great to watch. Very controlled, but with a LOT of fire. Definitely worth exploring. Gwyd |

Thanks, Gwyd, that's a huge help. Going to check the websites out, and probably cane my credit cards on them.

Another good fire tool is fire fingers, again used often for fire dancing, but you can also eat fire off the ends since each wick is on a separate rod for each finger. You usually can't eat off the ends of fire fans because of the amount of fire and how close the wicks are to each other.
I've seen men use fire fingers and fire fans before, but I do agree with Gwyd, they are on the feminine side.
