This might seem like a very mundane question, but does anyone here know the correct pronunciation of Dr. Zener's name? Is it pronounced "zeh-ner" or "zee-ner" or neither? If anyone knows for sure, I would be thankful for the response.

AFAIK, from my electronics days and dealing with Zener diodes it's "zeh-ner". At least that's how it is with an Australian or British accent. I would think the German pronunciation would be similar with a short z. Zee-ner sound awfully American to my antipodean ear.

I've always pronounced it as "Zeh-ner", but I just was not sure. "Zee-ner", agreeably, sounds terrible.

I've always pronounced it "Zen-er" I have a friend with Zener as a last name, and he pronounces it as I do.

No, someone else.
I was very young when Dr. Karl passed away. Besides, he was not a performer, but I hear he did like to dance. I do know a performer named Peter Zenner. Close, but no cigar. |

In Phil Goldstein's _Thavant_, (Seattle: Hermetic Press, 1991), p. 17, the author refers to "a standard pack of Zenner [sic] cards." More recently, Lee Earle repeats this spelling in "Zenner [sic] Cycle," which appeared in _Beyond ESP2_, (no place: MagicBox, 2005), p. 14. Of course, I would expect these two guys to know of Karl Zener, but it seems likely that both were working aurally from the pronunciation and not the spelling. For what it's worth, in electronics work, some couple dozen colleagues and I have always referred to Zener diodes, pronounced with a long-e. Finally, when I was writing a Zener card book some seven years ago, I had a chap from The Electronic Grymoire (of which I am a member) swear that Peter Zenner invented the cards! I let that subject drop politely. |

LOL. Peter would have accepted that honor, he invented Shakespeare, didn't he?
