Alain doesn't need me to defend him either but check this out. The first time I saw Alain perform a full stage show was at a nearby community college, the audience consistng mostly of members from 17 to their mid or late 20.
The opening act was a hip hop comedy duo. They were incredibly talented and had the whole audience laughing the entire time. It started to occur to me that it would be impossible for most acts to follow them, let alone something as cerebral as a mentalism act. Alain made the audience forget the opening act before he closed. He tuned into this audience precisely and from that point on they were his. I've rarely seen anything like it. Every emotion was evoked and people were in awe. I have a picture somewhere of a young lady fleeing the stage in what looks like a combination of fear and laughter after one of Alain's effects. Don't try and read anything into this. It was wonderful theater that brought the rest of the house down. My favorite memory of that evening was when Alain went into his specialty, metal bending. I wondered how this would be recieved in such a large auditorium by people who likely mostly had no connection to this being controversial or special at least? OK, maybe via The Matrix At one point, Alain was standing on top of chairs in the middle of the audience, students thronging around him. The noise escalated as people witnessed the impossible, more coming closer and Alain strategically working the room into a frenzy. Alain doesn't want to start a religion. That night, I actually saw how the old cliche could come true if Alain were not a man of integrity. He owned that room the same way they mean when the say musician or comedian owned a room. I will never forget that night. |

I have seen Alain perform several times. He is graceful onstage with fluid movements. His act is scripted and choreographed and well polished. There is a reason behind every movement.
I used to teach drama and acting and I know what I am talking about. Nu commands the stage when performing.

Wow, fantastic book. How enjoyable to read a book that has not only great technique, but thoughtfulness for both the performer and audience member in mind.
Thank you Alain for releasing not only a great resource, but an treatise which spawns creative growth in our art. I was fortunate to acquire a copy. I will not sell this. I wish to study it for quite a while, as I put to practice what is shared. |
