In your opinion is, or would it be worth while to practice card flourishes, to help with gambling moves. I obviously know that learning how to sybil cut will not in anyway make my strike second deal anybetter, but it may help down the road by giving me more dexterity, speed and control in my hands. Do you think that time would better be spent working on both gambling moves and flourishing or just gambling moves?
yes, I do realize that XCM and gambling moves are two complete opposites of the spectrum, gambling moves are not supposed to be noticed, and that, being noticed is the essence of XCM Griff |

To be honest, they’re both a waste of time.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Well in my opinion it would help to exercise the hand in the way that the fingers would be more flexible and for some gambling sleights that would be helpful, but as you said knowing how to do a sybil cut will allow you to second deal or center deal.
Another thing into consideration is the way you would apply such flourishes and such gambling moves, maybe you want to use cheating moves just to cheat in a real life situation, and in a real life situation you won't want the other players know you can control a deck of cards as they were clued to your hand or that you can extremely handle a deck of cards but the other way around. Maybe you just want to make a gambling demonstrations as part of your magic routine or card routine and in that way you want to impress the audience by demonstrating them you can handle a deck of cards as a complete card shark and in such a way you want to demonstrate that by using XCM. For me I like the flourishes but some of them, I don't wat to overdo flourishes, maybe some one handed cuts or anything like that but not too much, and well I do not use them when I perform or demonstrate some poker demonstations or cheating techniques in a routine. So that for me I would spend more time perfectioning gambling moves and make them indetectable at all, taking care of every aspect and angle instead of learning how to sybil cut or making J. Cornelius "A simple cut". Best Regards Pablo

It will help you in the same way the the more magic tricks you learn the easier it is to find out how new ones are done.
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.

Quote: Well exactly, you can do wicked flourishes and sybil cuts, but doesn't mean that it will ever help with your gambling moves. If you learned how to drive the car, did you first got skateboard and said to yourself "It will help me with my car driving", even though skateboard needs in a way more skill to skate, in a way.On 2007-04-04 20:04, Nordatrax wrote:

If I had more time on my hands I would practice cutting to an exact number of cards.
I'd get that down veeery well with different worn types of decks, from different positions (diagonal, lengthwise, sideways). Takes some dexterity! Andrei |

I think the flourish practice will definately help exercise the hands in different ways than the gambling moves. Think of it as cross-training.
