I know what you mean about Jay. The memories are worth more than the items he left behind. But a Jay Marshall item, no matter how small or large, can trigger some great memories.

When I see you in Schaumburg, I will tell you the funniest memory I have of Jay.

I was at the auction today.
I got in around 9:05 am and I registered.
It was packed...I would say 98% were men.

I bided on one item, but I didn't get it.
I'll get something similar along the lines anyway.
But the experience was fun and interesting.

I wore my
I'm older than Jasper (but not by much)
shirt...

And I felt that the t-shirt on my back had a
higher value than anything I wanted...and people
were staring at it, asked about it, or commented
and knew where it from.

Me & my p's went out for some lunchies and
by the time we got back, it sped up and was almost
over...by then it was around 3pm or so.

The auctioneer didn't take a break!

The highest an item got, from what I remember while I
was there was $6100.00

Although Bill got the cups and so a big YAY for him.
He really made sure he outbidded the other guy.

After the auction, I went downstairs with Chris
and helped pack some of the items.

Gabe & David did a great job getting it together.

I think they are allowed to catch up on sleep after
tonight.

I was the last bidder against Bill for the cups. I didn't know it at the time because I was bidding online but I got a feeling it was him. Figured he wouldn't give up so I gave up at the last second.

yes was about to correct you on that one... (from my previous post in another topic)

Part of the collection I think, not the entirety...

but yes I sat and watched.. and bidded.. but the items were going for far more than the estimates, and to be honest far more than I wanted(could!) spend!!!

I fancied the THE VERNON CHRONICLES 4 Vols Ltd Edition which was signed by Dai, and was limited to 4 copies... $1,300 + 20% fee, a complete set of MAHATMA MAGIC MAGAZINES went for $2,800 + 20%, RICKY JAYS CARDS AS WEAPONS also signed which I had my eye on went for a staggering $850!!

The Houdini lots went for a high price as well, the HOUDINI KING OF CARDS POSTER c1898 poster fetching a massive $11,000 plus fees and the UNMASKING OF ROBERT-HOUDIN Houdini SIGNED w/Photos fetched $6,200+fees

It was a pitty the ebay auction didn't have sound or video (most of the live auctions on there do..) which kind of took some of the excitement away from not being there..

I think I gave up as the last items came up (working out this was all out of my budget now..) I did did on all the above items.. but quickly dropped out when it went over my personally set limit for each item...

Marshall do you have any photos from the auction?? I'd love to see them!!

It was 22.5% bidder's premium. Jay must be laughing his tail off.

As Tim said, it was a 'blood bath.'

The Ricky Jaye books went way above
than expected...like $500 each.

Because they were signed, I'll have
to ask him to sign something for me
next time, instead of me giving
him my materials already signed.

The auctioneer did not seem to be very enthusiastic about the eBay bidders, because they didn't know that the bidding went in specific increments. So there were eBay bids that kind of nickel and dimed the auctioneer to death.

The telephone bidding did fairly well. But BEING THERE! There is no substitute for being there.

I was also pleased to finally meet Frances, and to see Louie and Arlene again after many years.

I felt the same way about the auctioneer with the eBay bidding too.
Especially after he just hit the hammer with sold,
and then a bidder online, increases his bid.

Phone bidding had no delay at least.

I did like the way he would come down into the crowd though.

I really admire him for not taking a lunch or bathroom break.

geez.
