I'm just starting out with memorized deck magic. I have bound to please and I just purchased mnemonica. I see most tricks require you to find a specific card in the deck but how do you do this casually? I mean let's say you want to find card 37, other then eyeballing where it might be and riffling around to find it, can someone provide any tips to do this casually and without too much fumbling? thanks.

Cut to where you think it is approximately. Get a glimpse of the bottom card. Then run the number of cards you need to correct. (Or obtain a break above the appropriate number of cards and undercut, if you went too far).
There is another way of doing it, using a certain type of gaffing, that is somebody's intellectual property (sorry, I forget whose) and nice, but too much trouble in my opinion. The above method should suffice. And yet another way is described by Aronson in his recent DVD set (which I highly recommend) that contains the Two Beginnnings effect, which requires this type of localization. The effect is you have one person name any card, a second person select any card - and voila - the freely selected card is turned over and turns out to be the freely named card! A very powerful effect, I have found. kerpa a/k/a Michael Miller Chicago area

Josh Jay provides some great tips in on his dvd on the "work" he puts into the deck. This makes the estimation work a lot easier.
Keep in mind too that estimation gets easier and easier the more you do it. If you've done any faro work at all, I bet you can cut to card 26 every time. Break up your estimation into groups of 13. Try estimating 13 cards from the top (2D in Aronson), card 26 (QH) and the 39th card (6H) and when you get good at that you are almost home free as you will never be more than a few cards off from any card named. I know this sounds somewhat cryptic, but once you start working with estimation, you will find that although it's not an exact science, it's not as bad as it seems when you are starting. |

I've come up with a way to "walk around" in the stack based on the old Haymow Shuffle which I've modified. It's explained completely in a couple of the articles on my web site. Go to the site, (URL below) and click on "The Memorized Deck Area" to get to the page of articles on memdeck work.
This is the technique I use, for example, when I want to start on Simon Aronson's complete 3 phase poker routine. I need to get rid of the top 11 cards from the deck if I'm in home position. I do this with what appears to be a normal Haymow shuffle, throw in a false cut, and I'm ready to go. Dennis Loomis

Consider using a marked/memorized deck, for example using the marking system (first published by Marlo) that I describe in my Scripted Insanity DVDs...it makes all the difference.

Davidson-san, in what source can I find Edward Marlo's marking system you referred?
As I have my own marking system for Memorised Deck, I would like to clarify if it is similar, same or different. Thank you in advance. Hideo Kato |

Mike Close talks about how when he's on a plane, or in downtime, he'll run through the entire stack, cutting to each card individually (AS, 2S, 3S, etc.) If he's off by more than 1 or 2 cards, he tries again. Like mentioned above, as you practice, you get better and better at finding cards quickly and efficiently.

I devised my own way or marking backs of cards for memorized deck work. I thought about it lot and tryed with Boris Wild marked deck and so on, but I wasnt happy about the fact that I had to scan the backs of the cards to find where the mark is and also 20euros a deck is something I didn't like very much.
Larry Davidson´s system was absolutely fantastic but sadly I coudnt find materials from Finland to make em for myself so only option was to design my own. Its rather basic scrating method but it took a lot of thinking to figure out what would be the least number of lines someone would have to make to back of the card in order to keep the marking fast and that they still would be fast to read. You really cant scrats numbers and letters to back of the cards small enough. Also it took some time to find right positioning so the cards could be read from spread and fan and that it would pass at least the basic riffle test. Its too long to explain here and it isn't avaible in english at the moment, but if anyone is interested I could try to make a translation in english or at least give out the basics so you could figure it out. Still if you have access to something like Davidsons system I would prefer it. Mine still allows me to do all the same stuff but isn't so clear to read. It takes little time to get used to but after that it is instant. I have showed it to some people with knowledge and I havent found anything similar but the solution in the end was so obious, that someone must have thought about it before. It wasnt however on "Marked for life" or other small deck marking booklets I looked for it. J-M |

Hi
I use exacto knife to scratch the value/suit of the card. They came out small enough and can't be noticed by layman. I even fooled magicians with it. You can also try a white pen/marker. For estimation, I corner short the 1st card and the 26th card (different corner) so it became easy to do a Hermann pass to the card. If you miss by 2/3/4 you can always use "Mnemonicosis" by Tamariz. For estimation why not use a breather crimp.
