Thank goodness my cat will only eat Meow Mix or Friskies "chunk-ball" canned meat! At least those aren't on the list.

As it turns out, the culprit is rat poison. Not just any old rat poison, but, rat poison that was sprayed on the wheat sold to us by that lovely trading partner China. One more reason to stop buying Chinese products.

Why are we buying wheat from China? Don't we make enough ourselves?
As for no longer buying chinese products, I think that would be almost impossible. American companies have managed to send nearly all our manufacturing over there in order to save money (so they say) and put American workers out on the street or working for lower wages.

China has a track record of tainted and inferior products. The poor quality of their lightbulds alone are enough to make you switch to mini fluorescent. But, killing our pets brings it to another level. Was the wheat used in human food?
From my experience in warehousing, if we have an infestation or a recall, the product gets trashed. We don't spray it with rat poison and try try to pass it off on consumers.

This scared me very much because my cats eat similar food. They are ok so far.

A large part of the problem is that we are dealing with a different country with its own rules about recalls and food handling. As far as I know, there are no international standards for something like this.

Just read the article listed above and have to say that I am not surprised that the lawsuits have already begun. Sadly, all these people and their lawyers see are the big bucks that might be won. I am still trying to figure out how the pet food manufacturer can be held accountable since there was no way they could possibly have known that the wheat was poisoned. If anything, the wheat supplier, if that's who sprayed the rat poison on the stuff, should be sued. Of course, that would involve dealing with them internationally, which is a bigger hassle than it would be worth.
As for the woman having her cat on dialysis for the rest of its life is its own form of very expensive torture on the poor animal.

The entire world is running after China economically and yet they are not meeting the promises they made. There economy is rife with pirated and sub standard products yet the economical world are still letting them dictate politics in Asia for the fear of losing out on the biggest market in the world. My question is just "What contribution are they making?"
I do not want to get involved in a political battle but I can think of two ethnic groups from nearby "countries" that are being pushed around and neglected by the US and the rest of the world purely because of China's possible economic benefits. Now, you reap what you sow. The world has to tighten the screws a little bit. It would be really interesting to see how this plays out but I cna already guess. No-one is going to take on the Chinese. |
