I'm to be a guest on another performer's show. I can't say too much but he's not doing anything related to bizarre magick, magic or mentalism - the closest I can explain is that he's telling ghost stories on stage at an upcoming arts festival. He offered me the spot to add spice to his show.
If you had three or four minutes to do a ghost effect - one effect - on stage in a darkened theater, what would you do? |

Ok, here's what I'm thinking, if no-one has a better suggestion:
Table Levitation. Ungaffed. 3 Audience members and me on the stage, while the rest of the audience joins "forces" in a united breathing attempt. It's visual, easy, and ghost/haunted related. |

The Sefelaljia (sp) mystery box where the "ghost" moves the ball, etc.

3 minutes??!? For stage with mikes needed and some props... Do this - throw a sheet over your head with eye holes cut out - say this isn't that scary - what would be scary is if there was a real ghost under this sheet... a horrible entity from the grave (etc etc).... the audience notices that you are actually standing with them at the back of the room as you approach the stage... the sheeted figure still present and swaying.... you go up and rip off the sheet... uncovering some glowing hideous phantasm... the lights go out... the thing glows for a moment then vanishes... the lights come on a split second later... you have the sheet still in your arms... no sign of the ghost....
Check out Berglas on this if you want to try it. That would be three minutes of insanity.

You can find Sefalaljia on my website in The Wizards' Journal #10. However, my choice for a quick effect would be a bizarre version of the Dancing handkerchief, not playing up the cutesy-poo aspects a la Blackstone, but the original Anna Eva Fay spirtualist medium version.

Check out the Mind and Magic of David Berglas - in the section describing his Mind Myth and Magic show, there is a really cool effect where he dons a mask and a robe and ends up in the audience and a stunned spectator is under the mask and robes - this can be adapted to the whacky idea I submitted above
(But yeah, it would likely be more than 3 minutes - but if the friend sets the mood with some ghost stories and the performer gives the ol' line "Do you want to see something REALLY scary...?"... it can be done in 3 minutes... the performer just has to be very good at running around
