I'm considering getting a copy. Anyone have this? Any reviews? Opinions?
Thanks. Todd

I picked up the CD-ROM version of Stanyon for about $40, hoping to mine the Cups & Balls articles for some lost or forgotten tips and tidbits. It was OK, but not the gold mine I was hoping for. Click HERE for more info; it is also available in a one-volume and three-volume hardcover set.
There is plenty of other interesting information in Stanyon for browsing, and if you buy the CD-ROM version, you can use the SEARCH function to find things pretty fast. If you like Professor Hoffman's "Modern Magic," then you'll like Stanyon, too. It's sort of a Victorian Tarbell Course, if you get the idea. SETH

This is a terrific book FULL of hidden gems. It's not something I would set out to read cover-to-cover, but I do refer to it on a regular basis, and every time I do I discover something new. If you want a sample of what's in store check out the free on-line volumes at The Learned Pig Project.

"Victorian Tarbell Course"-- I like that, Seth. There's something about the old old ideas that are great, because many are forgotten gems, or hidden, as Magiguy puts it. It does sound like a great reference. I'm looking to get the LL Pub version, which is one humungous volume, and not as expensive as the 3-volume H&R version. I know the cd rom version is cheaper, but I'm not really a big fan of books on cd-rom. I'm a rather old-fashioned bookish chap.

I have the L&L version and much prefer a single volume to the 3 book set. The print is small, but that isn't an issue for me (yet). I particularly like the column titled "Original Lessons In Magic."

Todsky -- I agree, I prefer books, too, but remember that you can print out any or all of the pages for future reference.
Since the CD-ROM was about one-third the price of the L & L volume, that decided it for me . . . . and I spent the savings on other books! SETH

Free download from Learned Pig! That's tempting. Ah, but the aroma of the book...
Seth: printing out the whole book will probably cost me more than just buying the book. I suppose I could just print out the pages that interest me, but I like complete books, and I'm becoming a bit of a collector.

Todsky, I opened other thread about these books (use the search function), and after informing about varios sources, my conclusion was:
1.- If you look for only information, the option is the e-book (and now the free download) 2.- If you look for information plus a book of paper like usable object, the Kaufman edition is the option: more usable and readable volumes, and complet indexes. 3.- Finally, looking for information + book of paper + "I don't have the money for Kaufman edition": L&L edition It´s up to you. |

Manos, you forgot option 4:
4: Finish reading the magic books on my shelves before buying anything else. (Of course, that's not going to happen!).

Although the Kaufman & Greenberg (not H & R, though we do have it in stock) 3 volume set (in a slipcase) is usually about twice as much as the L & L edition, it has the following features to consider: Much nicer biding and archival paper and full table of contents in the front of each volume. The L&L one volume edition on thin paper simply reprints the partial indices published by Stanyon during the run of the magazine. Richard Kaufman paid Stephen Hobbes to go through the file and create a table of content to make it easier to access information. This was before the digital versions made searching such a file easy. My personal recommendation is that you purchase the digital version for its search feature, then use one of the hardcopy editions to read the stuff you find. That's what I do!

Hi Richard,
I know the 3-volume version is nicer, but I just cant spend that much. Your idea to supplement the hardcopy edition with the digital indexed version is a good idea, however. Cheers!
