In a parallel thread, Bozo asked for my favorite books. Like with fiction, I now tend to buy the author. I buy new authors, and everything from authors who I've enjoyed in the past. If I get a book that I don't enjoy, with rare exceptions - I don't buy that author again. This has proven to be a successful strategy for years. While there are many, I'd toss out a few, in two groups: past and current.
Past authors, in no particular order: Bruce Elliot, Henry Hay, J.G. Thompson, Lewis Ganson (he had the contacts!), Ted Annemann, Hugard, Martin Gardner (he belongs on both lists), Hilliard, Bobo, Tarbell, Buckley, Fitzkee, McComb, Hoffman, Collins, Neil, and others. Current authors break down further to those that make me think and those I read for enjoyment for other diverse (but all positive) reasons. The first group: Lewis Jones, Simon Aronson, Darwin Ortiz (on theory and history), Karl Fulves, Peter Duffie, Jon Racherbaumer, Juan Tamariz, Max Maven, and others. Those I read for other (positive reasons) include Stephen Minch, Allan Slaight, Harry Lorayne, David Regal, Ed Marlo, Richard Kaufman, and many others including almost all non-slick magazine publishers. In the few minutes I took to compile this list, I asked myself if I would add any DVDs to the list. Unfortunately, none have given me the same enjoyment, "emotional investment," or mental stimulation. (That's not to say they aren't a valuable learning tool for many.) I also think that if magicians would have started "buying the author" years ago, there would many fewer books on the market. (The market itself seems to be solving that problem now.) |

You left out one of my very favorite (current) authors, which means your list is not netirely complete. An egregious omission. You need to add John Bannon. And I don't like your tone when you lump him in with "and others". Oh, what the heck...add your name to that list too.
