I learned it from reading "The Magic of Michael Ammar" and watching him perform the cups and balls in his Magic Castle Lecture video. Between the two of them, I was able to get it down, and it's definitely worth learning! Best of luck, Jeff

David Regal explains the spin and has some helpful tips in his "Cups and Balls and Cups and Balls" Routine on his "More Tricks" DVD #2.

The move appears to be based off of Nate Leipzig's "Drop Vanish". He didn't use any accessories -- just a ball and his two hands. Mora adapted the move, using a closed Chinese fan, and twirling that around the fist. Vernon took Mora's move, and substituted a wand for the Chinese fan.
See "Roy Benson by Starlight" for more info. -Jim

The description in the Dai Vernon Book of Magic is not correct. Also, Michael Ammar does not hold the wand the same way it is described in this book.
Lewis Ganson, while a great photographer, often edited descriptions of the way things were done, because he didn't feel they were correct. This caused lots of confusion over some of Vernon's moves. For example, the description of how to do the Ball, Cone, and Handkerchief was not right at all.

Regarding the provenance of the move, this was posted by 'hofzinser' here a while back:

Ammar doesn't do the Vernon wand spin like Vernon did either. Watch some old Vernon footage...there is a difference in each magicians technique.

Very few magicians can do the wand spin like Vernon did. You must have both arms broken and reset incorrectly to achieve that odd angle.

Do you suggest having the arms broken and reset incorrectly in a hospital setting or should one go for the original method and fall from scaffoling?

The scaffolding idea seems to work more consistently. You never know how a doctor will interpret your request.
DISCLAIMER: For all you folks in Rio Linda, and any children that may be reading this, I am kidding. Please do not fall off any scaffolding just to have your arms broken.

Falling from scaffolding is pretty easy...it's finding a bucket of mercury to climb up there with that's the tricky part
