This is one for the Pro's, sorry if its in the wrong place didn't know where else to post it...anyway, a personal question...What AGE were you when you became a full-time, no other means of support pro? I'm not trying to be cheeky here, but I have a feeling that we may see a pattern form if enough people choose to answer.
Thank you if you can help.

Magic was my only means of income between the ages of 19 and 24 and then I grew up. Actually then I realised that the job I didn't want offered me healthcare and a retirement fund which was pretty attractive since I got married. The I got divorced and moved to Taiwan and now I own an English school but I will give anything to go back to doing a show a day or more. Maybe in a few years when I hit 35. Actually that is the near future.
What pattern are you looking for? |

I was full time through college and grad school, how I earned my living and how I paid for school. Made a good living doing a combination of school shows and club/resturaunt work. Was a rough life though, on the road so much, living out of a suitcase, keeping peace with three others in the company and making sure we got to each place on time and getting all set up, tore down, and putting on a good show. It is a good living if you can take the lifestyle that goes with it. But it wasn't for me in the long haul, why I was in school. Still love magic and performing, but never the full time gig again.

Did any of you start professionally at 13? That seems to be the preferred age over at a few other sites.

Well I was 13 when some people were kind enough to start paying me money to entertain them/their clients. That doesn't necessarily mean I called myself professional though.
I'm not really sure where the flip came over from amateur, to semi-pro, to professional - I have been earning my money by performing magic since I was 13, and I now earn a very good living at 19, while attending university. abc - I'm sure it was said in jest but not all 13 year olds are bad and reveal secrets on youtube. I had a contract at a five star hotel for £150 ($250-300) a week when I was 13. I guess you cant really call yourself a pro until you are an adult though?! Maybe, maybe not. Liam

I wouldn't call myself any kind of legend but thank you for including me in that list.
In terms of calling myself a "full-time, no other means of support pro". I've never been there. Well, I have been there but I by no means made a good living at it. In those parts of my life where "performing magic" was my only income I was always broke. In truth I'm not far from there right now. Always a struggle. On the other hand. I can remember the exact moment I realized I was good at performing magic. Don't get me wrong here. I'm not saying I'm better then the next guy. What I mean is I remember the moment I actually consciously realized, "Hey, I'm good at this!". I had performed a lot before this moment. Small birthday party's and casual performing for friends. But for some reason this one night I was at a bar performing something felt different. I felt more open and confident. Before that I would do a trick or two then just sit back and be a part of the crowd I was in. But for some reason this one night I felt like a star or something. I know I can't explain this feeling but in a way it's kind of scary. I guess the old saying of "Our biggest fear is not that we are weak but that we are powerful beyond imagination" (Something like that) is true. I consider myself a professional magician now but not because of the amount of money I make at it. It's because of the experience I've had with it. I don't know if this has much to do with what you are asking but that's how I feel about it. Ron |

Onezero,
as in the case of almost anything in life, time does matter. Practice and experience gaining requires simply the time to do and achieve it. So the earlier you start, the better . . . you will always see exceptions of this rule though Andy

LOL. The last time I checked being a pro means you are 1 good and 2 it is you main source of income. Just because someone is a pro doesn't necessarily mean they're good at what they do. Quote:
I guess you cant really call yourself a pro until you are an adult though?! No, a pro can be almost any age. If you're getting paid to do it, then you're a pro, or at least a semi-pro. I have been performing since I was 18 and have been performing FULL TIME since then. Magic has and is my only job except for when I was 14 I worked in a Meat Market and Picked Berries.

Age has nothing to do with success. The quality of your magic matters. And you must have ability (or manager) to sell that quality to market. When you got both, you can start climbing the ladder to success.

Basically I'm trying to test and prove a theory I have about succesful magicians...the keyword here is SUCCESFUL btw So maybe don't take "pro" too literally...and we can now scratch the "sole means of support" condition...(I suppose success is not any easier to define ) So Mr. Jaxon , yes you would belong on the list imho. When I said Pros it was because obviously I needed some kind of structure to the question, other than "when did you get good?"..dig??

Well, without offending my fellow posters - but I wonder how you will you determine that the poster is successful or not? WHat is your measure of success? Amount of gigs, income, tricks published?
My answer was generic - successful people generally start early . . .

Welcome to the Big Time, I guess? |
